We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Never missing an opportunity to bring pork to his congressional district, the porkmeister Congressman Jack Murtha says he’ll be pleased to relocate the prisoners at Guantanamo to his district.
The news report notes: “Murtha only has a minimum security prison in his district. But he says he'd have no reservations about holding detainees there in a maximum security prison.”
The construction cost of a maximum security prison is upwards of $110 million, and operating costs in US prisons run an average of almost $100 per day per prisoner, and higher for maximum security.Plus there will be all the extra costs of housing and officing the government lawyers needed. Then, there’s the boon to the local hotels and restaurants from all the defense attorneys and reporters. Murtha’s constituents might disagree with Murtha’s comment that, "They're no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo." But, hey, there’s jobs and profits involved. I wonder which friend or contributor of Murtha owns the site that would be sold to the government.I wonder how close the site may be to Murtha’s house.
I don’t wonder anymore at Murtha’s gumption to bring home the pork, er or whatever it might be renamed in respect to Moslem food sensitivities.
Just finished the book "Charlie Wilson's War." If you have only seen the movie, it only deals with a fraction of what is in the book, and really glosses over who and what Congressman Wilson really was. Anyway, he was a close friend and ally of John Murtha, and their attitude towards taxpayer dollars and government spending to benefit themselves is enough to make anyone not of the liberal ilk sick to their stomach.
Among liberals, of course, they are considered heroes.
Re "They're no more dangerous in my neighborhood than they are in Guantanamo" as spoken by Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa), all I can say to this mentally deranged individual is that we can't even keep our own murderers in jail. A multiple murderer was just captured in nearby Maryland, where he escaped from the Minimum Security facility in Hagerstown, which is at the end of the world re location. That is not reasurring at all.
Terrorists comrades cannot get to Gitmo to try and free their buddies, but in the US they can seize schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, etc. as the Islamic terrorists did in Beslan, Russia, where they killed hundreds of hostages in their suicide stand.
Is any American city or town going to volunteer to be the target of hostage seizing terrorists who will travel there with US drivers licenses, in large van trucks, and with enough low-level weapons to get the job done (rifles, knives, explosives from common chemicals, chlorine gas bombs, handguns, and possibly smuggled in heavier items)?
President Obama is endangering American soil unlike any president in our history, and the blood that flows from his stupidity, blindness and poor advise/advisors will be ours.
(My son is an Iraq combat veteran and is presently protecting the US in an official capacity. He is on the frontline and I do not want him to die because of Obama's stupidity and negligence).
With Obama, Murtha, Pelosi, Reid and Panetta guarding the country, we are in for a national disaster.
Murtha's district is full of people who consider themselves hard working salt of the earth types, if they just show up at work. Not if they give good service, make a better product, or learn and improve, or even spend the day actually, you know, working.
The local governments are corrupt and inefficient, the county retirement home was featherbedded with non-working people who gave horrible care to their poor residents. Unions are strong because of past coal and steel industries, long since closed.
Everyone is a Steelers fan and Pirates fan, they want the world to be like it used to be in the 1960s and 1970s when Pirates had winning teams and played in Forbes Field, and the Steelers won their championships.
Any kids who actually go to college move away, there is nothing for them there, and older people pining for days gone by don't want to change anything to make their area more attractive to industry, recreation, or entertainment.
They love Murtha because while he may be a crook, he's OUR crook, look at all the govt money he pours into Cambria County and nearby.
John Gibson was saying today on his radi show that if the dangerous ones from Gitmo get relocated to US soil, then they'll get a trial. They'll all get acquitted, because the evidence against them is not admissible in the courts, involving putting spies on the stand and admitting to "torture", such as putting woman's panties on their heads.
To Ricefarm: Murtha was once an honorable Vietnam war veteran who did a lot of good for other veterans and his constituents, but he went off the reservation (mentally and criminally), mastered the art of "pork" to keep his constituents employed and on his political plantation, and put on a coat of teflon that would make mafioso John Gotti jealous.
People no longer vote for honest politicians in many places. They only vote for their own selfish needs and the country be damned. And this attitude is spreading and destroying America.
