We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Sugarloaf

Since it's going to be as cold as heck everywhere this week and weekend, our group decided that we'd rather freeze skiing at Sugarloaf than freeze with the annoying NYC and Fairfield County crowds in the annoying and tedious Vermont lift lines.


There are excellent last-minute MLK weekend deals, thanks to the lousy economy.


Looks like the weather will be invigorating - around or below 0 (F) all weekend. But I've skiied at -10. The trick is to keep moving, and to try to resist the temptation to lick anything metal.


And to not overdress for the temp. If you do, you'll sweat too much coming down, and the sweat will freeze to you on the lifts. Best to stay cold. After all, it is winter - and the earth is cooling fast.


This is an 8-hour drive for me from NYC. Sugarloaf is up in the Rangely area where I have happily hunted and fished in the past. I'm leaving now, back Sunday night. Will leave some pre-posts for our Editor's kind consideration.

Great choice! The Loaf is the best! Only above-tree-line skiing in the East. Spent a week there over the holiday. Friend has a place on the mountain, top of the U. West trail, just below Bullwinkle's.
Hmmmm, perhaps we'll head up there as well...

For some reason I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of falling through a lift... to hang by stripped off pants with freezing ass visible for all to see, the whole way down. Is this wrong?

I don't think its wrong. As long as Barney Frank, aka Mr Hot Bottoms doesn't stumble across your path and put something unnatural in your freezing ass.

haha. You must have seen that picture on Drudge... or somewhere this week of a guy hanging from the chair with his pants, undies included, ripped down to his boots.

I skied at Killington where, when the wind chill was -150 at the top of Killington Peak, they threw blankets over you at mid-station so they'd not have to chisel frozen carcasses off at the bottom. The lift at Great Bear Lake in Utah was such that we'd be in fog, snow, ice, and freezing wind until we got high enough to where it was sunny and bright at the top. We got off smiling, "Oh, this is so nice!", and by the time we got down, we looked like icebergs and had to go have a bloody mary.

I thought the infamous "Vail ski bum” incident would be a Failblog classic by now, too, but I guess not.

Now, I know this was quite traumatic for the poor guy, but I can't quit laughing whenever I see a picture. Not sure if the guy will sue or what.

So Meta, did you drive past PC, Alta, etc. to get to GBL? Or were you just in the neighborhood? Can you compare it to PC area or was that a one-time excursion to the beehive state?

Did go to Alta and one other one in Wyoming near Park City. I was visiting and went on to Colorado to do some of the biggies there. Wow is all I have to say. Skiing in the west is a dream compared to the east. But this much I can say - if you learned in the east, you can ski anywhere in the world.

We're planning our trip this week. Most likely Vail. We ski the west one week a year. Never skied the east. Not much for wet sticky snow, though we did encounter such in Whistler two different trips. I like PC the best as far as food and drink, though the Mangy Moose in Jackson Hole is probably the best apres-ski party time I've ever had. Just hope I can still fit into the ski clothes. We missed last year due to the fickle fate of life but I can't wait to get back on a mountain.

Good for you! I am always happy for people who do things for pleasure and do it consistently. To make it a point to go skiing out west for a week each year is too cool.

I think Steamboat Springs was my favorite 'town' for party time. I did go bar hopping in Jackson Hole, but it was summer. What a neat place. I could live there as long as I had a view of the Tetons. We went to a restaurant on top of a mountain near Teluride and halfway through dinner, one of our party slumped down and out. The waiters calmly rolled an oxygen tank over and revived her. What was funny was that the incident kind of put me into a mild state of shock and I had to have a few gasps of the juice. :)

Our Whistler trip was the best ever. But I know they can get damp, esp near the bottom. It will be a prob for the winter Olympcs. Great mountains, tho.
