Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"One of the few things Russia does well"??? She is lovely but she is also an engineering major. What Russia does well? Try fighting Napolean and the Nazis and enduring privation and hardship the likes of whoch we pampered Westerners never have. Try Russian literature. Ballet. Certain Sports. Science. Soldiering. Try scouting for talent wherever it may be found (this last under wicked communism) and developing it. Try faith, tested by martyrdom and oppression under a godless regime. Napoleon and Hitler also underestimated the Russian people. I loathe communism,and am terrified by the Russian mob, stunned by the alcoholism and high rates of child abandonment in Russia today, but the Russian people are awesome despite their sorrows. Don't be so patronising about them, or you will seem as foolish as people who minimize China by cranking about the shoddy goods they export.
Allow this remark to rise all the way to really picky and a super buzz kill however I'll embark on the higera.
"One of the few things Russia does well"??? Here BD is using the verb "to do" in the indicative perfect form meaning what is currently happening. Russia (in the past) accomplished all the things you mentioned. Most of the first have of the last century the Soviet Union made great industrial strides at the expense of what many historians calculate to be well over 100 million deaths of their own population at the hands of Lenin and Stalin. Read Harvest of Sorrow by Robert Conquest. Yes, the pampered West allowed their populations great freedoms to be pampered but morally, economically , and any other measure you choose we beat the Soviets while supporting most of the world financially. So your examples are in the past and the tense should reflect that. Today Russia is headed back into the Cold War days of having a dictator and mass killings. But they do produce their fair share of hot babes. My cousin Habuski says dat Rrrussian women are really fine. He even used the term ????????????? ??????? ?????? ?????? which translates really hot babe foxes
You have a good eye BD, but then we already knew that. This may be slightly off-topic, but I've been hearing conservatives saying that Obama's administration picks are surprisingly "centrist" in nature, pointing to Hillary, to Gates, etc. and other foreign relations selections as examples.
Let's pause a minute here and consider this. Perhaps he is willing to buy approval from the centrists in our population with his foreign affairs picks because he doesn't really want to concern himself overseas. He doesn't really care. His overriding aim is to reorganize our American society from the top down to the bottom up along socialistic lines... to change the substance of our domestic society from conservative, small-government, free enterprise principles into a big-government socialistic planned economy. "1984" here we come. And the observant among us all know how well that has worked, from Russia, to Cuba, to China and on down. Friends, this is scary. Our only hope is that he won't be able to do this in four years, and that maybe enough of us will get revved up in the next four years that we'll be able to defeat him in 2012. Maybe. Marianne Marianne,
I think Obama is smart enough to know he doesn't know much. That's why he surrounded himself with people who know a lot, and he did this after his first private talk with President Bush, the director of the CIA and the director of NSA. At that point, he realized that whether or not he is concerned with events outside of the country, they are concerned with him. His overriding aim to reorganize our country may prove to go the way of George Bush's plans to 'fix' the country when the next serious foreign affair takes center stage as 9/11 and all that followed did. Plus, he doesn't have a filibuster proof congress and that might make Harry Reid's head explode to say nothing of Nancy Pelosi's implants. Obama is inheriting so much that I'm surprised he hasn't run home to where the politics are easy. I have faith that the pendulum will swing back. ` MM,
It gets worse than that. I thought I was pretty well up on stuff but I just read this. So far 32 states have passed legislation calling for a constitutional convention. The articel said only two more states were needed and it would have to take place. Now the absolute horror of this is that if one is called the members could totally throw out the one we have and totally rewrite a new one. I do remember a PhD once telling me it would be the biggest mistake this coubtry could ever make. To have another constitutional convention; opening up the entire field for all manner of dictatorial centralized government and elections every twenty years...just imagine what could come out of a new convention at this time in our history. source: http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/6958 Financial treason. That's what is happening to our country. There are more Madoff stories to come. More dominoes to fall and more landmines to step on. These degenerate, reprobates will kill us all. I won't be happy until I get my pound of flesh from these sociopaths. Habu wants to hang em, I want to burn them at the stake. On the brighter side, I got some Christmas spirit today. I went out and killed a tree and brought it home. I never lost power during this ice storm. Opened my house to anyone who needed a shower, or needed water, or wanted to stay warm. Kinda like Grand Central Station. I wished everyone a Bah Humbug when they come and go. I love this time of year. "Are there no prisons , are there no workhouses"
I think American women are the best, and most beautiful. Maybe I'll consider a Russian babe , if my crazy kraut, mick wife keeps yelling at me.
Jappy,
They burned and hung the horse thieves they caught in Lonesome Dove: I see no prohibition from us using the same method. Some consideration should be given to the method used on Ill Duce, Benito Mussolini. But the one absolute has to be that of having the deed done in public and broadcast. The perp walk is nothing. Oh, jappy ... I'm so glad you never lost power in the storm. I've been wondering about that. It's typical that you held 'open house' and 'open showers' for anyone who needed it. That's the real Christmas spirit.
Merry Christmas to you and yours. You are the best kind of Santa. Marianne You took my words, Marianne. That is so sweet of you to open your house like that, Jappy. I wondered if you'd been one of the ones affected by the outage and am glad you aren't so you can sing Christmas carols to your wife next to your new tree. Let her open the Walmart gift first and turn that yelling into something fun. :}
` I, too, like the way Bush handled the shoe-throwing faux-journalist.
I do, too. He's great. I wonder if the SS got the shoes. They can put them in GWB's library. I know he'd think it was funny to display those 'size 10's'.
` What a great idea, Meta. That's just the sort of thing GWB would do. The way he handled that incident was top of the class. It may take twenty years, the way it did with Truman, but twenty years from now presidential historians will begin to assess correctly what a good president he has been. By then, today's mainstream media will have died a coward's death and a new media, a better media, will have taken over.
See? I can be optimistic too. Sometimes. Marianne |
