We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
That is EXACTLY how I like to see NYC.... from a distance. I have friends who travel from Dallas to NYC every year to spend three-four days shopping..... for most of the same stuff obtainable locally (and to attend the plays which are not). I am glad for them, spending money and keeping the economy rolling.
As for me, I'll spend my bourgeois coin locally and skip the place....
A beautiful skyline, the hues are pastel perfect, a moment in time so serene a Taoist could only understand it.
So why is it I look at it and miss the Twin Towers and seethe with anger that drives me to wish we would drop a hydrogen bomb on the tribal areas of Afghanistan and irradiate that area for a hundred years.
I have not felt personally fulfilled in getting my pound of flesh from Islam. I don't think I ever will. I regret being too old to fight them in the field.
