We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
That upsets me. I raised money for McCain. He has had months of an open field to run down like a rock star and a winner. (Of course, Obama has had plenty of campaign-killing weeks too.)
Perhaps their plan is to let Obama blow himself up...or perhaps they are asleep at the switch. But all I can see from here is that Obama is dominating the press. As they used to say in Hollywood, "Bad press is better than no press."
Does McCain want to win this election? He's the better man, and the media is (of course) trying to bury him, but why is he in hiding? He has disappeared since the primaries, and that was a long time ago.
My friends are all afraid that he is trying to pull a Bob Dole election.
Where's the Viagra? Where's the "hope"? Where's the promise? Where's the inspiration? Where's the America? Where is the darn campaign?
This year, he should be running like an Eisenhower, as the calm, moderate, rational, calming, optimistic, stabilizing, patriotic and America-loving guy that you can trust not to take big risks, roll the dice, and make a mess. Sanity.
That's tough, in a roll-the-dice and pray-for-the-best sort of year. Still, I believe that Obama's politics are his own worst enemy.
Do you want all of the reasons not to worry?! Republican presidential nominees are notoriously slow out of the gate but after Labor Day the tide inevtiably turns unless you have Bob Dole redux. But there is no comparsion this time other than the age factor.
'Bam, as the NY Post calls him, hasn't really been vetted yet, vetted that is, by the 527's. You can't call running in a Democrat primary being vetted since the Dems and their allies don't want to alienate the heir-apparent to the throne.
McCain, of course, could still boot the thing away if he doesn't decide to go on the attack. Too early, say the pro's, save it for after Labor Day. Many of us have this sinking feeling that McCain deep down doesn't really care about winning, or is not willing to do what it takes to win, which I believe is the Barrister's point, he just wants this last notch in his gun, er, ah, resume: "2008 Republican Candidate for President".
For once you all can witness me sticking up for Mac.
Green- you are correct in many ways. The obvious thing here is to remember that Hillary did not concede. McCain needs to run against Barky. Going around pointing out what an empty suit, and a big fat communist suit it is, will only put some air behind Hillary's sails.
That MD80 incident was a bubble. Everyone knows those things are rickety and have jack screw problems. So no surprise if another Ron Brown or Paul Wellstone happens, right? (here comes the Barky memorial at the convention "we vow to live up to his Dream...")
Obama had better watch his ass a little better with the Clintons around still. McCain needs Barky to live until the convention with no serious murder plot, gay drug use, or racist pastor eruptions to earn him the boot. Since the press is behind him all the way and will continue to bury these things, his life is still very much in danger.
Once Barky is the official candidate and there are no more Funeral Grandstands (like the convention would be), Mac can (hopefully) paint his opponent with the proper brush. Cross your fingers.
I was a Romney supporter, and all I can say to McCain supporters is, you projected things onto the candidate that weren't there. The maverick image was a media smokescreen. What you have is an aged, tired, vindictive, largely liberal, cranky empty suit with a rich rich wife who happened to be a POW.
Where's the campaign? I'll tell you where the campaign is, they're calling my house damn near every day begging for money and using Obama-means-the-apocalypse fear tactics. That ain't gonna play in Peoria and it sure as hell wont get me to contribute to such a loser mentality.
You raised money for McCain? Jeeze, I hope it was only after he had secured the nomination. For me his only selling points are that he isn't Obama and he has a reasonable foreign policy. On everything else he is for s**t. That is he economically illiterate is an under statement.
FWIW: I gave a k-buck to Thompson. I won't vote for McCain in November. I live in MA so my vote doesn't matter anyway (but I will vote in other elections; we have a ballot initiative to eliminate the state income tax).
