We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
In fact, in America’s largest cities, a firefighter married to a schoolteacher can earn close to $200,000 filing jointly. So not only will each spouse separately pay more for Social Security and health care under Mr. Obama’s plan, together they’ll also be slammed by Mr. Obama’s cap-gains tax increase.
This is more than just a failure to understand the Laffer curve. It’s another cultural misstep by Mr. Obama. I can’t help but wonder if the senator knows any cops or firemen. His appeal is to well-educated latte liberals. That remark about middle-income folks having turned to God, faith, and guns because of economic setbacks? Not only was it ill-advised, it illustrates the wide cultural chasm that exists between the candidate and the rest of America.
Kudlow makes the point that we have made many times here: the American socio-cultural Middle Class - if any such thing exists - spans family annual incomes between $40,000 - 200,000. Plumbers in my village make $200,000 if they work hard and will show up on weekends. My gunsmith charges $175/hr (but he gives me a break if a job takes too long), and his wife works for the town.
I heard the soundbite where BHO was quizzed about the Laffer curve, given two chances to explain why he would raise taxes when "every time it's tried- tax cuts increase revenue to the government"- his answer: Fairness.
Every time I hear fairness from a commie like him I reach for my walletgun.
Perhaps Obama is shrewder than he knows. Perhaps he wants to tax the plumbers and firemen more so that the guys with soul patches at Barnes & Noble will seem more equal in salary. Some of the elites that Obama tries to appeal to are indeed wealthy, but many of them are art-history and sociology elites who deeply resent an economic system that doesn't reward them.

Stevedores and operators of tower cranes can also earn well over $100K a year. In my estimation, anyone who is willing to work in a tiny cab that's perched several hundred feet in the air, handling loads that could easily crush the people working on the job site below, DESERVES that kind of pay. I think most such workers who earn that kind of pay doing a dangerous job would consider themselves middle class.
