We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I cannot understand willing suicide-bomber Jihadists, but I can understand being willing to die for a (good) cause, and can imagine doing so.
But I cannot even imagine a sort of human who could imagine using mentally disabled kids as remote-controlled bombs. It is sub-human - no - satanic, as far as I am concerned. I have at least as many devilish thoughts as the next guy, but I never would have had that idea nor, I would like to believe, would your average Moslem.
No American, even the most sympathetic multiculturalist, knows what it might be like to inhabit the soul of a person who would do such a thing - for any reason. Everyone knows these people are barbarians, but most are too polite to say so. However, the Western notion of "polite" does not go far in the Middle East, where different codes are in operation.
People have spoken to me about Western secular humanism and making a religion of human life. As a Christian, I do not believe that human life is the most precious thing. A gift, perhaps, but during most of human existence it has been "poor, nasty, brutal and short," and more of a burden than a gift. It is unique - a world miracle - that Western civilization has arrived at a point at which it is unthinkable to use a dog, much less a human, as a guided missile against innocents. We have largely escaped the "brutal and short," except for our sociopaths.
Quantitative differences, accumulated, become qualitative differences. In radical Islam, we are dealing with something that is beyond our civil, soft, and sentimental comprehension. If they would leave us alone, I think we would be more than happy to leave them alone in their own Dark Ages like a historical zoo, an anthropological curiosity, a quaint tourism destination, or a Disney show - to emerge from cocoon when ready. Meanwhile, don't tread on me, because a soft and decadent Rome already went through a barbarian invasion and it did not work out well.
I do not want these people to like me.
(If this is incoherent, it is because Mark Levin is screaming in my ear with McCain Derangement Syndrome. And, mind you, I was a Fredhead, but I always simply vote for my most Conservative and electable choice. If I can be convinced that Mitt can win a national election, I will vote for him. I am old enough to know that one must always hold one's nose when voting.)
Editor's note: Our loyal reader AVI notes, in a comment, that NPR reported this story tonight simply as another suicide bombing. Incredible...but not. NPR is our BBC, omitting inconvenient facts when they do not fit their ideological biases.

Radical Islam is a strange ideology, but remember, from it's 'roots', it IS Islamic.
I disagree. Such lack of concern about human life and human dignity was commonplace in Europe in the year 700.
Good to see a cite from Mr. den Beste. Despite his withdrawal from the day to day, his writings are as relevant today as they ever were. Yes, I know, he was just passing along a message on your particuilar link.
AVI... a good point. But this particular option was not available 1300 years ago. Had it been, do you think it would not have been used?
In the end... none of this has anything to do with religion, except tangentially. It is about egoism and power... oh... which oddly brings me back to religion.
Mr. B., with all due respect... should we ever again let loose the 'dogs of war'... well... let me just say, its effects will be much more harshly felt than those of suicide attacks.
I plant myself here... but they need fear retribution. Not just the individuals, but the entities involved in supporting them. Until we disregard international law, which is pussy making at best, and concentrate exclusively on our survival as the greatest nation on earth... we will be flummoxed by these flea bites.
Granted that we were a crueler people in preceding centuries, I still cannot think of examples of Christians sending fools or defectives on unknowing suicide missions. We've done some terrible things, but not that style. I am willing to be corrected on this if you have counterexamples.
Next, what would you say about a "news" organization which did not report this detail about the bombing? Even on a man-bites-dog level it's the most interesting part of the story. When NPR reported this story tonight, it didn't mention this aspect.
Pentagon report didn't mention the defects of the women which are sketchy.
In both bombings, the attackers were mentally disabled women whose explosive belts were remotely detonated, Gen. Qasim Atta, spokesman for Baghdad's security plan, told state television.
Atta said the women were strapped with dynamite and ball bearings, citing members of the bomb squad. The explosives were detonated via cell phone, he said.
An Atta aide said that people referred to the bomber at central Baghdad's al-Ghazl market as the "crazy woman" and that the bomber at a second market had an unspecified birth disability.
The aide said authorities believe the women were unaware of plans to detonate the explosives
U.S. military officials referred to the two attacks as suicide bombings, saying both women detonated the explosive devices.
"The crazy lady." does not establish that the chicklet was mentally disabled nor does having a birth defect establish the other chicklet was mentally disabled.
Nevertheless, the women exercised Islamic duty to die in the cause of Muhammad's devil-god or maybe, it was exercised upon them.
Granted, NPR may not have initially reported the heinous crime as you would have desired, but listen to Scott Simon's essay on NPR.com. I am not a big fan of Mr. Simon's but this report decries the barbarism of these acts and does not shy away from subject of using the disabled as human bomb deliverers. They should not be referred to as suicide bombers as these two women, and perhaps others tricked into service, were most surely murdered.
Evil knows no boundaries. This incident and others like it should serve as a reminder to Christians of the extent of Satan's cruel power.
" As a Christian, I do not believe that human life is the most precious thing."
What do you consider the most precious thing?
I ask because if we humans are not the most precious things, why would God want us with him in Heaven?
Our life with God, not our material life. In Christianity, our material life on earth is not the big deal, is it? It's trivial.
I confess this is the first time I've heard that our lives on earth are trivial. We are often asked, through churches or civic organizations, to help the poor - often in third world countries. Why should we bother if they're all trivial; and especially why should we bother to help a non-Christian?
I am undone by your statements. Is abortion and death penalty no big deal then? Is not reaching out and helping a stranger no big deal because he's trivial? I do not understand the Christian purpose in devaluing life like this. What is our purpose on earth, then?
I can only explain it as evil.
Not one of the mullahs is out there with an explosive belt ready to kill himself and the infidels or other Muslims. It is always the brainwashed fanatic, or, in this most reprehensible case, a mentally disabled person. You would think that the brain-trust would want their allotment of 72 virgins too!
This fact alone lets you know that these are political men who wrap themselves in the cloth of religion - Islam. How many times has this been done in the course of history?
Islam is also a false and bankrupt religion. The more I learn about Islam, the more I am convinced of this. Mohammed was a man of this world, looking for political gain and the perks of power. He cherry-picked from Judaism and Christianity to invent his own religion that would install him in power. World domination was his theme. In the name of god and with himself as the beneficiary, Islam would rule. Mohammed was a pedophile and corrupt person who maintained power by fear and intimidation.
A person who leaves Islam is subject to death in many Islamic countries. That will keep the voices at bay. And the list of violations goes on. Like in Saudi Arabia, where the woman who was raped was sentenced to 200 lashes and prison after she appealed a sentence of 90 lashes. The examples could go on and on.
Mohammed, Al Qaida, the Taliban, Khomeini, Ahmadenijad and Khatami are all the same - the personification of evil.
