We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The burgeoning former so-called second and third worlds--aka "bric" and "chindia" (Brazil, Russia, India, China and associated economies) are also eating better--more meat & dairy--which also pushes up food prices.
"Here's how the UN climate conference delegates kept their cool. The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
The air-conditioning system installed to keep more than 10,000 delegates cool used highly damaging refrigerant gases - as lethal to the atmosphere as 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and nearly the equivalent of the emissions of all aircraft used to fly delegates to Indonesia. ...
Staff from Australia's Natural Refrigerants Transition Board and the London- and Washington-based Environmental Investigation Agency noticed the stockpiled cylinders of hydrochlorofluorocarbons - a refrigerant likely to be phased out over the next few years because it devours ozone in the upper atmosphere. In addition, the refrigerant is a potent greenhouse gas, with each kilogram at least as damaging as 1.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide."
Chavez and others want to stick it to USA with high oil prices, at least they say so. Other side of that coin is that poor people cannot afford tractor fuel, nor grain shipments.
Do the hungry poor make good socialist subjects? Relate this concept the the other article about Boomers bankrupting us all, relate that to the rise of "climate change" as an explanation for every drop of rain or gust of wind and I think you can see the future as the Red hand would have it, ala 1984 with revolutions and purges and wars over resources.
The pinkos in Portland City hall wouldn't care if the local economy went to hell. Just means more bike paths and indentured servants. I have yet to see, in 15 years, a single city commisioner or mayor be voted OUT for any reason. Now they talk about "car-free" zones in the same breath as "climate change". Yes oh dutiful rulers, what can we sacrifice for the common good today?
As long as their bellies are growling, and they're depending on the goodwill of the local party boss for the ration cards, and the local party boss is backed by a secret police who may be watching through the eyes of neighbors, yes, the hungry poor make good socialist subjects.
