We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The unarmed home, more

We believe that an unarmed home is a potentially dangerous place. As with fire insurance, you just hope you'll never need to use it. 

"Shoot first" laws are growing in the US, making life tougher for bad guys.

However, Bruce notes that some people would prefer being victims. I think that is the height of irresponsibility: protecting yourself and your family is the most basic duty in life.

Sunday evening and no one has responded to this thread. Perhaps it is because we have covered some of this before.

But in reading the above referenced part that relates a conversation where one party claims they would rather be killed if attacked in a home invasion than kill the attacker,was a joy to read.....yes a joy....the sooner someone with that mindset is gone from this Earth (hopefully before breeding) the better off we'll be........but then I suppose the world needs sheep too so perhaps a rethink..they could be used to clear land mined areas, or as volunteers for human experimentation on various iffy drugs. That would certainly add a not of honor to their demise.

" Here lies John Q. Public who volunteered for a dangerous drug experiment to cure AIDS" that is noble and if they value their life so little then why don't we round up a bunch of them and volunteer them. If they didn't volunteer we could threaten to shoot them, or give them the choice to volunteer...hey I'm beginning to think we can beat a whole host of human diseases ...apparently we have some folks walking around who don't really care about their lives, so I say we give them a raison d'etre.

Yes we have covered it but some things keep coming back. I thought that quote from Bruce was astonishing, but there must be tons of people who feel that way.

I too find it astonishing. But it's that ole truth is stranger. than fiction stuff I guess.

I mean the Shakers didn't believe in the beast with two backs to produce new life. Their numbers were only supplemented by recruiting ( into celibacy..wow) or adoption.

I have a candidate. I once forced, by conversation, an in-law to admit he would only defend himself when 'they' were walking up his driveway. I just let out a sigh, and changed the subject. Lots of family gatherings in the future you know.

I agree with your post 100%, Habu. And the only comment I have to make is the same I'll probably post on Kim du Toit's blog; poor Sally Slovenski. She just doesn't get it.

Thanks Hope...I use to post at du Toit's until I disagreed with a few of the regulars...believe it nor not Kim steps in and bars me from his site ... his site ..his prerogative ...personally for such swagger as is found on that site, especially from Kim, I found my personna non grata status to be quite out of character.

The argument here eludes me: you want more weapons in the hands of unprepared, fearful people to protect them from equally fearful, rare, burglars or invaders? Exactly how often does this happen? I saw the comments on the Connecticut case--terrible. Would guns in the house have made it better? Or is that a fantasy of the gun culture that everyone will use good judgment and have the requisite skill to deploy the firepower effectively. Further, suburban Connecticut is one thing, but do we want more weapons in the Bronx, Washington DC, Chicago, or LA? I think probably not since violence no matter how justified has the effect of begetting violence, which is exactly what we'd like to see less of.
