We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
What dribble but coming from a party who's (sic) hero is a big fat white guy on the radio who needs drugs to get an erection what can you expect?
Our reader 1) Failed to realize that the piece was written by an ardent liberal and 2) Failed to respond to a single point in Taibbi's entire essay and 3) somehow tried to turn the discussion into a discussion of Rush Limbaugh's potency. Slightly off-topic?
Second, this comment on the same post:
Aaah, you mean like such not-angry and thoughtful political philosophers as Rush Limbaugh, Mike Levin, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, Neil Boortz, and Michelle Malkin, right? If only liberals could bring to their movement the authenticity and intellectual consistency of the three pillars of modern Republicanism: nigger-hatred, religious fanaticism, and proto-fascist war-mongering.
Please tell me this: Where is the hate on Maggie's Farm? There is none, although we are certainly in favor of killing Jihadists who war against us and want to kill us. We posted a thoughtful liberal viewpoint, as we occasionally do, and we received such hateful - but contentless -comments...from liberals! I just don't get it.
We will engage anyone on the issues and on the merits, if done in a neighborly and respectful manner. The only thing we are knee-jerk about here is Freedom and the freedom and autonomy of the God-made human individual.

Perhaps, as a recovering liberal, no, a recovering Leftist, now free of delusions for nearly two decades, perhaps I can shed a bit of light on it.
During my twenty-odd years on the Left, I worked with an assortment of Leftists in various causes from Vietnam to Central America, and from nuclear disarmament and nuclear energy to progressive Catholicism, poverty and women's issues. Most (not all) of my fellow Leftists were self-righteous, nasty, controlling, vengeful people if confronted and sometimes even when unchallenged. Especially the females!!!
I once asked a Lutheran chaplain who had worked for many years with people from various backgrounds if I was delusional in thinking that pacifists were intrinsically violent people. He stated that his experience led him to believe that they almost all were repressing a great deal of violence and that my intuition was correct.
I ran afoul once of some progressive Catholic religious (Franciscans and others) and never met such utterly Stalinistic individuals anywhere. They would have made Mao proud.
Misanthropy seems to be the hallmark of liberals--hate the sinner but love the sin. Or, I love humanity but hate humans. Which is why liberals cheerlead en masse for abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia as well as the destruction of the traditional family. And why they need our prayers to find some sort of true love and real peace in their disturbed hearts. Pardon their rudeness, pray for them, but keep your powder dry.
That sounds like a depth-psychological explanation, John. It might be correct for all I know, but why the hatred towards a liberal post? Is it because the guy dared to question himself? Self-questioning is what writers do.
You are right in your assumption. What greater threat is there to any socio-political philosophy or cause than a believer who begins to question its validity? Remember that many communist purge trials were carried out against those exhibited the slightest deviation from the ideology. So those who were executed were often true believers who were neither sufficiently true nor believer as whimsically defined. That people who were often innocent of any charges were also caught in the net is part of the danger of being on the Left.
Well, maybe our Salon link today caused some of the ruckus - but I am glad to have their link. We welcome all comers, but I would prefer that they address issues on the merits rather than flame with name-calling. Debate is great, but name-calling is infantile and an indication that one has lost the disputation.
Those guys were trolls. They had one purpose and that was to do just what they did. Notice they did not limit themselves to the post but inflated it to include their talking points. They wanted to upset you/the blog, and they are never lucid and never offer alternatives to counter their whining. It's a sickness, but most blogs have it way worse. That's why the larger blogs have a registration or the host spends his time banning trolls.
And usually when you get linked, you'll get some trolls. Look at the bright side - you can better appreciate what this blog stands for day in and day out.
I've been trying for some time to figure out how to talk to liberals or leftists, without much luck. I am starting to develop some thick skin though. It's in the playbook, if you start to lose the argument destroy your opponents character ( i.e. if your arguing about illegal immigration, call your opponent a racist ). Argument won.
I should know the mindset since I too was a liberal many years ago, but I can't seem to remember what was going on in my head at that time. I should add that I'm an alcoholic ( recovering ) which could explain some of those lost memories. John Hetmans comments were very helpful in clearing the fog and for giving us the best way for dealing with the left - Prayer, but keep the powder dry.
