Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, February 9. 2007A hoot owl, and a minor insight on Social SecurityI bundled up tonight in my old, green, moth-holed wool hunting sweater, and went out after dinner and sat on a frosty lawn chair by the tarp-covered pool, southwest of good old Hartford, with the river chortling in the cool, dim Yankee distance, with the hoot owls hooting far, far off over the hill (What owl, Bird Dog? Hoo, hoo, hoo), and drank a very tall, straight-up, weather-cooled Laphroaig while smoking a delicious Cohiba (sorry, Fidel-haters - I hate him too but I am a sucker for an illegal cigar). Only about a balmy 34 degrees outside. Paradise. Maybe it's my age that led my thoughts to Social Security - not that it will make any difference in my personal life. But it dawned on me why the Dems are so fiercely opposed to private investment of personal Social Security accounts - even as little as 5%. Of course, we know there is no such thing as personal SS accounts - there is no money there. And of course, the Dems do not want to do anything to risk their Ponzi scheme which would be illegal if any private enterprise tried to build it. But what I realized was this: Even a tiny % of SS investment would make it possible for all Americans, voluntarily, to become investors. Every household could have a stake in the free markets! God forbid - the pathetic Great Unwashed McDonalds-eaters we care so much about - in our markets? The proletariat, become filthy capitalists? No, no, no: they should know their place. The US is well above 50% financial market investors already. Anything higher would create a solid majority with a stake in a capitalist economy, beyond their participation in their daily work. That is the Socialist's nightmare. They cannot tolerate the notion of the proletariat, who are supposed to be on their plantation, checking the price of their GE, Exxon, Apple - and their Heinz. Why? Because how can government take from private enterprise, and over-regulate private enterprise, when a strong majority of folks are invested in it? The Left cannot tolerate wealth-building amongst the proletariat, because it reduces their dependency on the State. Same reason they support death taxes. (They tolerate it quite well amongst themselves, however - but they are different, because "they care".) That's my insight. Blame it on the Laphroaig. Or on Mr. Moon. Good night, moon. Editor's comment: See comments, but this is the all-American Mr. Great Horned Owl. Typically 3-5 deep hoots. A wonderful creature and a terrifying predator, if you are a weak small animal. Known to take skunks, cats, and young raccoons. Often heard, rarely seen. Comments

That would be Mr. Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus, our majestic night-time predator who is nesting and breeding right now, and laying eggs in the center of winter, so that all the baby critters will be available for food when their chicks hatch and are hungry. The finest night winter sound. Lucky you to enjoy their serenade.
Mr. Barrister,
That crisp wonderful air. I do the same thing. Get outside on still cold nights, bundled up and mostly think. It is the solitude for me, the stillness that moves the thoughts. It sounds like Zen, but Zen Masters say if you can explain Zen then you don't understand it. Your thought on social security is so true it simply needs an ovation. So I will join in the applause, and ponder the thought. Thanks Habu Thank you, Habu.
We should make you an honorary Yankee. I like the stuff about our Great Horned Owl from our Honored Editor- what a wonderful animal. Bird Dog knows his birds. Here is a Great Horned Owl story for you.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/nam/se/mtsi/mtsi233.htm On the death taxes, it is all just the same old story of the grasshopper and the ant. Owl, the only bird with binocular vision. how can that be? but it is.
Owls are very cool birds. Hardly ever see them, but easily identifiable by their calls if you take night-time walks.
There really is an antipathy toward growth, over there on the left.
Creates too many liberated voters. That's why they want high taxes even tho they have to create the need for same, by wasting what they've already collected, and ignoring the proven Laffer Curve. Nope, it ain't the JFK party of old, anymore. It's become the Soros party. Well put. The rise of the investor class is going to erode support in state-sponsored plans that return less than 1% on "investment." (That is: forced taxes.)
How do you keep plenty of pissed-off, poor, gullible wards of the state voting for your party? Here's 5 big ways:
1) Take over the K-12 system, then ruin it (see global achievement rankings, spend high, rank low). 2) Unionize basic industry and ruin it (see GM, Ford, & war on WalMart). 3) Celebrate vice, mock virtue (see worship of hollywood, mocking of religion) 4) do not fight for international place, but isolate, to cede domestic market to unions (resulting high prices to subsidize Dem party power base). 5) demoralize population by devaluing ideals. Great points Buddy..and all true. I've listened many times on youtube.com to JFK inaugural speech..he'd be called a raving warmonger by the Dems today.
Owls I have a Bard owl that raids the squirrel population that live in the seven oak trees on my florida property. I came home one moonlite night and sitting on a 10' high fern plant holder was Mr. owl. bard owls are big. He let me approach to about 15 feet, just looking down at me ..made the hairs on my neck stand up. I turned and went inside and he just sat there looking for prey. I hear them hoot most mornings. BL, I checked out The Scotsman newspaper. It's one of the main voices of the Scottish Socialist Party so I guess when I had my kerfuffle with them their answers were right in line with socialist thought. Apparently they've been in an ethical (ethics with socialist, yeah) by charging way too much for advertising. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland_on_Sunday There appears to be nothing the SSP wants to pay for. Their platform is free food, medical care, transportation, you name it ...this from the country that generated the idea of capitalism. For those interested in my colloquy with some leftest Scots (I wasn't aware at the time) here is the aforementioned kerfuffle..scroll down a bit to get to the comments. http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=186532007#new Habu:
That would be the Barred Owl, a denizen of swamps and lowlands. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Barred_Owl.html Mickey Mouse's Grim Reaper:
http://www.homestead.com/hawking/files/Snowy_Owl.jpg Thanks BD..must be my southern heritage..you know..things like tire (on a car) are really "tars", and oil is awl...
However we do have some virtues...I've never heard a southern man use the words mauve, and very few the word pastel. Best H Under Pinochet, Chile converted from a Ponzi scheme to a system where individuals own their accounts. So far, it is working wonderfully. Chile is the standout nation is South America today.
Consider the irony: by letting people own their accounts, they created an incentive for every person to want the nation as a whole to succeed because everyone has a personal financial stake. Socialism, which purports to be all-for-one, one-for-all, creates incentives for selfishness, as witnessed by the refusal of Europeans to accept even the slightest cut in entitlement programs in order to forestall disaster. Again, the left is wrong but will never see it. Here, habu--send 'em this:

Trickled into the house last night and found an alarming, sulferous odor in the office wing of the house. Electrical fire? Sniffed all around the place. Noticed it was strongest where the windows were wide open. Stepped out into the backyard. Ah ha! The p
