Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Russian or Ukrainian?

Our new housekeeping ladies only seem to speak Russian. They work hard and quickly, strong too as if they grew up on farms. Their English seems limited to "Good morning" and "OK".


I do not care where they are from as long as they are legal. Large portions of Ukraine are Russian-speaking, but I just wondered whether they would say "Ukraini" because there seems to be antipathy towards Russians these days, and sympathy towards Ukrainians. 


Anyway, who cares?  Clean and orderly household is all I care about.

I think the sympathy toward Ukraine is disappearing. It is unfortunate that the Ukrainians and Russians were set against each other by the US/Nato malfeasance. Zelensky functions well only as long as he is slathered in money. He is no more stable than Hunter Biden with a crack pipe in hand.

I have a fair amount of sympathy for the poor bastards (on both sides) that are doing the fighting and dying, but none for the Ukrainian government/oligarchs.

They can sound similar.
Our brick mason is Ukrainian, ~60 years old.
First day he did work for us years ago I greeted him in Russian (had clients in Moscow)
He bristled as he responded in Russian, then explained they had been forced to use Russian in schools and many public settings & hated it!
If the ladies are Ukrainians, they are likely speaking their language and will say so!

That's curious, but they could be from anywhere in the FSU, and I've learned over time that part of the Soviet plan to homogenize their nation involved re-locating Caucasians en-masse throughout their regions, some that are now Eastern European and Western Asian. So you can't always tell by appearances, but all of them spoke Russian. Oh, La-La - some of those girls were instant heart-breakers, so beautiful. How do you communicate then, in Russian?

The Ukrainian army and government are infested by actual Nazis. The Russians here are the good guys. The US/Kiev regime are the bad guys.

I went to Ukraine 2011-2012 and had to present to the government. The official language of Government was Ukrainian, but none of the Ministers and Staff spoke Ukrainian. I needed a Ukrainian - Russian - English interpreter. Interesting.
