Bari Weiss on the elite prep schools: (h/t K-12 Implosion)

... physics looks different these days. “We don’t call them Newton’s laws anymore,” an upperclassman at the school informs me. “We call them the three fundamental laws of physics. They say we need to ‘decenter whiteness,’ and we need to acknowledge that there’s more than just Newton in physics.”

What is wrong with these people?

Sobran got it right about these people twenty odd years ago.

So what are Maxwell's equations? Chopped liver? This is crap you get when teaching credentials go to collegians at the bottom of the barrel.

The teacher places an appropriate value on his/her moral capital - it's worth less than his/her conscience, less than arguments they know are intellectually and morally corrupted.

The key strength of these specious arguments hinge on the desire for status and acceptance by the herd. All this hand-wringing by parents, when they should be making fists instead. The well-being and growth potential of their children, for Chrissake.

Newton's Laws of motion are not fundamental. To call them that reveals great ignorance on the part of the teacher. Newton's Laws are a wonderful, easy-to-use set of approximations that are quite accurate (they got us to Pluto!). But only approximations.

When you say you are applying Newton's Laws, everyone knows what approximations you are using. It is important.

It's not dark yet, but it's getting there.

This is just changing the test answer and not really education. Being that, it would have been better if the school had found someone who understood the classical physics laws of motion for large bodies in the constrained forces of experiential human life.

Very often, labels preclude and interfere with actual knowledge of a thing. Richard Feynman spoke quite well on this subject relating a story of his father teaching him of bird, but he never learned their names.

Can we all not agree that Newton identified as a handicapped black lesbian the same way Socrates, Julius Caesar, Shakespeare and Copernicus did? In fact, I'm pretty sure all the famous people in history were black and/or gay.

The only fair thing to do is discontinue the systemic effect of our technological dependence on Newton's laws until someone less white has a chance to develop them independently.
