We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

CHAZ, in Context

The larger French Revolution era extended all the way until the end of the Franco-Prussian War.  This current situation, as I'd written about the other day, is much like the French Revolution.  


The general approach of this crowd isn't too dissimilar to the Spanish Inquisition, either.  If you're not in, you're out, and you're going to have to be punished.  They claim their 'goal' is peace and freedom.  They prefer to see people suffer.  They have marketed themselves to their constituency well, shifting everyone's eyes away from historical precedent.

On one hand, you have the ones who earnestly desire the French Revolution. On the other hand are those who never expect it.

Love the SF video. I noticed that people drove like a’holes even back then. In the first minute there is some guy weaving in and out and around other cars cutting them off just like a modern day punk in a suped-up rice burner with a fart pipe.

Just a minor quibble.

This strikes me as more like the Chinese cultural revolution than the French Revolution.

The French Revolution changed the institutions of government, monarchy for republic.

The Chinese cultural revolution was about ideological purity and shutting down people holding the wrong opinions by public shaming, removing opponents from their positions and worse of course.

We are having our culture changed before our very eyes.

I agree with you - these are pets in garden. They are allowed by the powers to exist and are not a force unto themselves. More like the 12 year olds that ran the re-education camps for the Khmer Rouge.

The French Revolution was, originally, about changing government. It evolved into a major societal shift.

If you've read Robespierre, he basically said all the things the people today are saying - he sounds wonderfully 'enlightened'. Of course, killing a few people to achieve that new society was just part of getting to where he felt France needed to go.

The French Revolution didn't really change government. It didn't become a true Republic for many years. The Revolution first 'ended' with Napoleon becoming an emperor, then the return of the Bourbons, then the Orleans, then a 'republic' of sorts, then Napoleon II...the real republic took close to 90 years to appear.

The French Revolution of 1793-1799 (when Napoleon became First Consul) was as much a social revolution as anything else. Statues toppled, buildings burned, Churches seized, people killed. If you said anything remotely 'off' from the official line, you'd have your head chopped off or you'd be assassinated.

Today we're not assassinating anyone (yet) or beheading people (yet) - but character assassination and social beheadings are quite common.

Rolling Stone magazine has declared these people "Twitter Robespierres" - and it's an accurate phrase.

I see far more in common with the French Revolution than the Cultural Revolution. At least with the Cultural Revolution you could sign up and be part of a fairly steady cadre of enforcers. The enforcers in this 'movement' shift from day to day and moment to moment. Just like it did in the French Revolution. Knowing where you stand is a difficult prospect.

Read everything Marat wrote. He was for the monarchy until he was against it. He was against beheadings until he was for it. He actually encouraged the murder of the clergy (not too different than people encouraging the death of cops today).

Just my POV. This is a societal revolution, just like the French Revolution was. People think the French revolution was about governance. It wasn't, really. It masqueraded as that. Early on, the people would've been very happy to have the Bourbons remain in power, with some shift of authority. That's eventually what they got, anyway.

There's a great podcast by that guy that did the history of Rome on Revolutions in general and it includes a wonderful section on the French revolution. I agree it was complicated. That said I don't see the real power behind the baby Frankenstein movement changing or even suffering, even if the little people get sideways with the movement from time to time and the moderately famous are taken down by the mob. History rhymes so yes I agree with you too that there are definite notes of the French Revolution and yet some things that are unfortunatly original like the mass self loathing. I don't recall any former revolutions built on a healthy contingent of self loathing Baizuo. While Lafayette was sympathetic to some reforms I do not believe he loathed his class and I also believe he was after the softest managed landing possible for example.

They were shoving crucifixes in priests' ears so they couldn't hear confessions, shoving rosaries down nuns' throats until they suffocated, and lopping heads off the children of the nobility. They changed the calendar and measurement systems. It was ideological puritanism through and through.

But I agree with you about the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The communists studied the FR. And the Nazis studied both.

IMHO things like this tell intelligent people who to vote for and who to kick out of office. Sadly there aren't many intelligent voters in Seattle. This is by design; this is what the Democrats do. They appeal to every minority and special interest group who put their own desires above the countries needs.
