Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Perilous State of the University: Jonathan Haidt & Jordan B Peterson

Two smart guys, Peterson (a mostly-Libertarian, or at least anti-authoritarian sort) and Haidt (non-Leftist Liberal). Warning: Once you begin, you will not want to turn it off because these are thoughtful, knowledgeable guys.

I took the "Disgust" test and came out 77% Democrat, which is almost 180 degrees off. The problem is that a surgeon is disgusted by almost nothing. Certainly nothing like maggots after you have removed them from a nursing home patient's nose.

I'm watching and Haidt agrees with my theory that hte Academy was taken over by the left in the 60s because they were avoiding the draft by staying in grad school. He adds "Social Justice" but I think that was a very small group and related to the draft and the war.

An elderly Episcopal priest once told me the same thing when I asked him "what the hell happened?" to the mainline Protestant churches. The seminaries were flooded with draft dodgers who wanted to avoid Vietnam, and once they got in they realized that churches were great venues to push social activism, with a captive audience and money source that provided a pretty cushy existence without much real work. Of course, those denominations are pretty much in terminal free fall right now.

I have never heard that but it certainly makes sense as most if not all of the Methodist ministers I have had were pretty far left. Enough to make us skip church more than we should. They loooooved both Clintons and Obama even though they were far removed from Christian behavior and teachings.
