We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

So sensitive to offended students, aren't they?  As we keep trying to point out to the academic so-called grownups, these kids are manipulating you.  And, as with 3 year-olds, the more you give in, the more they want.

The kids want to avoid Shakespeare?  Well, all the world's a stage, kids. And guess what? That observation is far more profound that it seems.

We keep thinking of college kids as "students." Not so much anymore. Presidents and provosts, given the changes in the industry, increasingly regard them as "customers." They call them students, to flatter the kids and parents, to keep the serious faculty on board, and to salve their own consciences. And they still try to mean it as much as possible. They remember a time when it was (somewhat) true and the education was at least more real than now.

But restaurants don't earn their living by telling you which foods are best for you, though they often mention it on the menu, just as a selling point.

The administrators didn't mean to give away the store, but they did, one cowardly but seemingly defensible decision at a time.

Customers. It explains a lot.

Require the University to be the cosigner of the student loans and I rather suspect they can come up with a better teaching model and business model in no time flat. They have no skin in the game...only the taxpayers are at risk. If they don't approve of the change they can go the Hillsdale College route.

The students aren’t manipulating them.

The adults on campus teach the kids to recite this garble and then reward them for the recitation.

This is like the EPA getting environmentalists to sue them to do stuff the EPA wants to do already. This is like NuLabor paying quangos to lobby NuLabor to do dumb stuff that NuLabor wanted to do, but nobody sane ever asked for. So then they could say, “look, the public is demanding this crap”.

It’s kabuki. AstroTurf. Fake activism. The administrators get to pretend they’re sane adults, but maybe just a little too indulgent and tolerant. No. A college administrator can’t just do this stuff on his own hook. They can’t ban dissident speakers all by themselves. They need to blame it on the students.
