We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My ideal citizen is the self-employed, homeschooling, IRA-owning guy with a concealed-carry permit. Because that person doesn't need the goddamn government for anything.
We're probably going to switch over from home schooling to a charter school next year though. Kids 11, and she doesn't realize how good she's had it. Lets my wife find a part time job too, so we can contribute to the retirement fund.

My County Commissioners have become so afraid of losing FEMA and federal flood insurance benefits that they've suddenly begun asserting the right to demand a permit for any home repair no matter how minuscule--a new doorknob or pane of glass. They must know at some level this is crazy, but they lose the ability to think about what they're doing to our liberties when they contemplate the federal funding they might lose.
They should be keeping the feds off our backs, not delivering us up to them. I want government officials who spend more time thinking about how to disentangle themselves from state and federal strings than about how to beg for their money at any cost. So I'm going to run for one of the Commissioner seats opening up next year.
