We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My father turned his childhood hobby into his profession. That is perhaps why he told me the following back when I was in high school: that more rigorous academic standards will also kill self-inquiry. If you lack free time because you are doing so much homework, you will not have the time to pursue hobbies or independent intellectual pursuits.
Considering the trends for decades after he told me this- think all those AP courses in high school nowadays compared to 40+ years ago- my father was prescient.
Ditto with parents organizing play time instead of the way it used to be done- kids doing it themselves. Self-initiative is being killed.
