Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I've never really understood movie lists. They're always curated under titles like, "The 40 Greatest Zombie Love Stories," or, "Four Dozen Julia Roberts Legal Thrillers You May Have Missed." The ones I really don't get begin with, "The 100 Greatest... I don't know about you, but I don't think there are 100 movies, total, worth watching twice. A list of 100 Greatest Movies wouldn't need any additional qualifiers. There are maybe a hundred great movies, period. Even a good movie is pretty rare. Office Space is a good movie. It's good because it played small ball. It used offbeat actors and looked at mundane things in a fresh way. Your job sucks and you're lonesome and your boss is just going to have to go ahead and ask you to come in on Saturday. Galaxy Quest came out the same year, and had the same fresh feeling despite the subject matter being pretty well picked over already. If I had to explain to an alien what the American cultural and business landscape looked like when the clock was about to strike the millennium, I'd show them Office Space. Since they were aliens, I'd have it dubbed in Spanish. The movie is a Swiss army knife of quotes, too. There's one for every occasion. Let's look at the business news today, and see if the little world Mike Judge invented between the lo-pile carpeting and the drop ceiling of Initech still holds up: What's More Distracting Than A Noisy Co-Worker? Turns Out, Not Much I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven. I'm sure there are a hundred movies worth watching more than once. Most good films should be watched a second time if you really want to understand them.
I always enjoy when you are running the show, Mr. de Hauteville. My kind of humor. " I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?" "Office Space" never fails to entertain, even 100 times in.
There are several others I continually get something from and enjoy multiple times. "Shawshank Redemption" is another. "Legends of the Fall" was an overlooked romance with a very strong political message throughout its entire story arc, and loaded with great quotes. Just a few worth mentioning. Of course, "A Clockwork Orange" will never pass without having me watch it. The same with "The Godfather" - though I've watched Michael Corleone so much I've started to realize you can overdose on too much mob. Re: 25 Fastest Growing Freelance Skills
Just my luck. My skills aren't on the list. That's good. I would rather be dead than work at any of that 20, except possibly the one or two STEM skills listed. Of course there's always different strokes for different folks, or whatever the millennials say.
I have degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. I haven't done engineering since the middle '80s. My computer experience doesn't match any on the list.
Thankfully, I found a job (to be retired and post inane rantings on MF and a few other places)! Gotta believe there are 100 great or near great (better than good) movies. And that's not even counting Galaxy Quest.
Quick start: West Side Story Die Hard Stalag 17 African Queen The Matrix Stripes The Longest Day The Incredibles Terminator Terminator II A Fish Called Wanda The Avengers Pee Wee's Big Adventure Ghostbusters Iron Man Cars Back to the Future Star Wars Rocky This is Spinal Tap The Wizard of Oz Trading Places 2001: A Space Odyssey Ratatouille MASH Chicken Little And I've never seen the following, but heard they're good Godfather Jaws Alien Apocalypse Now Gone with the Wind Doc, we agree completely on Spinal Tap. It is a great comedy and has SO many lines that my wife and I use every week to cheer each other up. "Sexy. What's wrong with sexy, then?"
You need to see Gone With the Wind. It was a masterpiece in its day and is still a cultural touchstone today, though most millennials haven't seen it. I don't think Steve Martin gets the credit he deserves. Hard to pick just one of his movies, but one that couldn't be made today is The Jerk. Good comedy is edgy. Unless of course it is edgy about a protected group, then it is forbidden. And must be censored. And wiped from the collective memory. I think the best Martin flick is Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It melded old detective noir flicks into his own movie. This was WAY before Forrest Gump did it for a wider audience. And like all Martin movies, it is chock full of quotes. It's hard to find but if you see it you won't be disappointed. QUOTE: There are maybe a hundred great movies, period. Top-100 movies according to movie directors. Here's a few notables: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick Citizen Kane, Welles Taxi Driver, Scorsese Vertigo, Hitchcock The Godfather, Coppola Breathless, Godard Seven Samurai, Kurosawa Modern Times, Chaplin La Strada, Fellini Some Like it Hot, Wilder Lawrence of Arabia, Lean The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, Leone Seventh Seal, Bergman Battleship Potemkin, Eisenstein M, Lang The General, Keaton Chinatown, Polanski Your mileage may vary, but all have had a profound influence on cinema, For instance, they're remaking Seven Samurai — again. -- Bergman, 4 Kubrick, 4 Fellini, 4 Chaplin, 3 Godard, 3 Hitchcock, 3 Scorsese, 3 Wilder, 3 Kurosawa, 2 Leone, 2 Lynch, 2 Welles, 2 Another brilliant movie by Mike Judge is "Idiocracy". Just a classic funny / scary movie I see something new every time.
Oh goodness, yes! Hilarious movie that has so much truth in it that you think about the dark sides of it long after the movie ends and you stop laughing.
Dude, I've been working in IT since the early 90s. "Office Space" is the closest thing to a documentary about working in a software company ever made (at least down in the trenches, the experiences of the startup guys are probably different). I have met each of those characters at several different companies, and probably been Michael Bolton at a few.
Bueller's Day Off is nice not for the so-called laff-riot but for being cool under pressure.
My favorites, view-again but only the good parts, are (romcoms) You've Got Mail The Proposal Laws of Attraction Notting Hill Two Weeks Notice Music and Lyrics Get Smart (2008) which is something of a plot mess, there being a battle between joke writers and story writers assembled into a movie with what they had filmed, but some nice points about feminism. I judge flicks by their best parts, not by the overall thing. Simon Pegg tends always to be good. With Lake Bell in Man Up, to start; but also the various inept criminal flicks.
Eagle vs. Shark is good retroactively. Simon Pegg was sublime in Shaun of the Dead. Tremendous film.
The Big Lebowski ages very well. Also a quote factory. There's a quote for nearly every situation in that film. Plus the F-Bomb supercut of Big Lebowski is F***in' amazing. Blazing Saddles. Seen it 60+ times.
Most quotable movie ever. Excellent article
"My Little Girl Almost Became a Human Sacrifice!" http://breathofthebeast.blogspot.ca/2016/10/my-little-girl-almost-became-human_26.html I've hit the dregs, in my vast project to watch all the films I should have watched long ago but didn't.
I bailed out quickly of the last four "you may also be interested in" buys. So probably I've now seen all the good ones. Actually all my favorites all turned up in the first couple of dozen, long ago. So the recommendation system is pretty good. |
