We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Fetishizing Science


I have no idea what Alt-Right refers to. It's a new term but I do not know who it describes. I can't even tell whether it is derogatory or not. Z-man discussed Science and the Alt-Right.


"Science" is an odd word. I guess it applies to knowledge obtained through the scientific method. I do not fetishize it because I am a natural skeptic - and because I know that science is done by human beings with egos and a need for income. Hence Most Scientific Findings Are Wrong or Useless.

Some think the Alt-Right is anti-semitic, anti-black, and all-together horrible. I don't know what it is, but I suspect that's all-wrong.

Much of the Alt-right is made of the old tea party that has decided to arm up with confrontation, pitchforks, tar and feathers. If nothing improves after the next election I rather think it will convert to Molotov cocktails and IEDs. I suspect this is the last chance to avoid chaos and bloodletting.

This is the last chance to preserve the truth. Obama has already announced that the government should "curate" the internet to make sure only government-approved truths regarding things like climate-change will be presented. People on the internet must be given a "safe space" so they won't have to be presented with ideas that conflict with the government's declared truth.

Alt-Right means a lot of things to different people, including those who self-identify with it.

Certainly includes the more staunch TEA-Party members who want limited government.

Also largely includes a nationalist, segregationist belief, that nations are made up of their people and heritage. Geography does not possess magic to turn immigrants instantly into members of a nation. There is a vocal and consistent notion that all people should have their own nation, and not mix. Personally, I believe not all Alt-right members believe this to such an extreme, but it's there in some form.

This leads to the accusation that the Alt-right is anti-black, anti-semitic, etc. Not exactly true, they want separation from others, they don't want to rule them or destroy them.

Alt-right make some well-supported arguments about the fact that race is scientifically real and in mocking those who believe "Muh Constitution!" will convert ppl of entirely foreign cultures to their way of thinking. Without the culture and ppl who identify with each other and the values, the constitution isn't worth squat. They're right about that.

So they mock "cu*kservatives" who are deathly afraid of being called racist and constantly invoke the constitution as if it has magical powers.

It's had some effect. I ridicule accusations of racism that would have deeply offended me 10 years ago. Cons who are constantly trying to prove how un-racist they are seem kinda wimpy to me now.

Then the radical Alt-Righters tip to full-blown authoritarianism, antisemitism and race-hate. Not my bag at all, but I've rejected the wuss right as well.
