Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Introductory overviews


Oftentimes Wikipedia can provide a handy overview of a topic or an idea which helps me orient myself in my thinking about it.  By contrast, ye olde Encyclopedia Britannica was verbose, rambling, and not well-organized for a clear overview. Just my opinion, of course.


The old one-volume Columbia Encyclopedia did that better. I relied on it when I was young.

I'm a fan of Wikipedia and you are spot on: I find it the first place to go on the web to get an immediate introduction to, and overview of, any given subject you can name.

I'm quite involved with language and language science so here's another site I find very useful too:
