We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Public and private universities in the United States are regulated to the nth degree.
Federal, state, and local higher education laws seem to multiply by the hour. Bureaucrats now dictate campus policies regarding academics, sexual assault, athletics, dining, technology, employment, campus construction, and student health, among other areas. Meanwhile, schools devote millions of dollars and valuable resources to comply with those rules—many of which confuse and do little to improve student outcomes.
We should get rid of the Federal Government at all levels of education, but the schools are too hooked on the $$$$. Plus, IMO the educators do not mind the liberal/socialist agenda that the government pushes.
Careful with your comments...you will send all those academics scurrying to their "safe zones" where they can wring their hands and have a group hug. Whoops, group hugs are probably not allowed--sexist or harmful or something, unless you have asked permission.
The Feds might be killing universities but I think of it more as assisted suicide. If you go on a campus these days it is a combination of Club Med and a high end summer school. Most students are not taking challenging majors, none of them work part time jobs, girls all carry $500 handbags and the guys have lost all sense of masculinity. Colleges offer Sushi bars, massage therapy, and some in the north country have rooms with sunlamps for seasonal affective disorder. Only the very top schools still look like the colleges of the 50's. All of the others are in an arms race to see who can deliver the best facilities. They've all given up on education a long time ago. What they deliver today is a four- to six-year Carnival cruise to nowhere.
The Ministry of Truth shuts down private schools much faster. The Davids don't stand a chance against the giants of DoE. My sister's cosmetology school, which she started more than 20 years ago, was put out of business by truly diabolical methods. The oldest running cosmetology school in the country has graduated its last class this year. It is a crime.
