We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A poll showed that 13% of the world’s adults or 150 million people would move to the United States if they were allowed to. If 1 million immigrants can’t fill all those jobs that Americans won’t do, let’s try 150 million immigrants.
I would like to test that premise of whether Americans would do those jobs or not. There are plenty of dangerous or unattractive jobs that people will do if the wage or status goes up. I've done some myself.
I get so angry when I see that many American citizens in our cities can't find jobs, but we still think there is plenty of space for others. I don't fault those others for wanting to come here, by hook or by crook, but this is a case where mercy for immigrants means injustice for natives.

that's part of the reason, the social stigma and associated low compensation for many "dirty jobs" to use Mike Row's phrase which is appropriate.
It's hammered into children from preschool that they MUST get a college education and college level job, that anything else is demeaning and they're too good for it.
As a result people look down on those doing any job that doesn't involve sitting in an office for 8+ hours a day, and pay those who do work with their hands accordingly low (in general).
Mind that there's nothing wrong with office jobs, I have one myself and happy to (in no small part because if there were no office jobs I'd be classified a disabled person because of my bad back and knees that make most physical labour impossible for me), but for people to think that anything involving physical labour is demeaning and they're "too good for it" is a real problem plaguing our society for decades now.
This is crap. There are jobs.
Jobs unfilled because there is a predrug test.
because you cant go to the bathroom 4x for 30 m
at a time to check facebook.
because you need to exert yourself a little to earn that paycheck rather than collecting.
on the flipside I'm hearing of truckers not getting loads because hiring illegals is cheaper. Tech people training their cheaper replacements.
