Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

My cold, dead hands

The EPA Is Going to Regulate Wood-Burning Fireplaces Out of Existence


That is not from The Onion. Wood stoves and furnaces, and charcoal grills too. These bureaucrats are crazy and drunk with power.


"Everything that is not banned should be mandatory."  Your moral and intellectual superiors say so. It's all for the best, for the greater good. Trust them.

They won't do away with all of the fireplaces or everyone burning wood.

If however, you happen to donate to the wrong candidate, criticize the wrong politician, deny global warming . . .

then a Swat team may just show up at your house and haul you away to a reeducation camp.

When everything is a crime - everyone is a slave of the government. They can imprison or bankrupt you whenever they want. Ayn Rand spelled it out in an excellent passage of Atlas Shrugged (which I can't find right now).

So if we're hit with an EMP in the winter time, we're screwed. No heat and light for us because we're not allowed to use a wood-burning stove or even have a real light bulb.

Yes. I saw this awhile back. I still have not yet seen a time line for the prohibition of new wood stoves, but when I went to look for a new wood stove a couple of weeks back there were none to be had. I haven't yet checked online.

Enforcement on existing wood stoves looks to be very problematic to me, but if they can cut off the sale of new ones, attrition will eventually take the existing ones out.

This will be a real hardship on a lot of people in rural areas that have to replace wood with an alternative energy source. It will mean less disposable income and thus another nail in the coffin of the dying US economy. Those in the EPA don't care and I am sure that those EPA princes that use like and wood heat will either be ignored or granted waivers.

If I was naive and optimistic I would expect the repubs to ride to the rescue and right this wrong.

No surprise. They also want to regulate swimming pools out of existence, via the CPSC. Lots of tools at their disposal since the executive branch has gotten so big.

Our federal government, as well as many of the state and large city governments, have gone Full Monty Fascist.

You may own your land but the government owns the rain that falls on it. Which is all to say that they own your land - you are just responsible for the taxes. Shut up and pay.

The State Government of California already did this. I made allowances in my sun room remodel for a future fireplace and now I cannot build one.
