Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Stuff Learned vs. Time Served


I think formal education ought to proceed at the individual student's pace, not lockstep by age and class grade as in the German model.


Achieve proficiency with something, then move onward like merit badges.  That would certainly appeal to most kids, I think.

First, let's figure out how to keep merit badge awards honest.

Keeping it honest is always the problem.

However, this sounds a bit like what effective teachers have always done, grouping kids by ability and working with them as required.

I am all for this. This would have eliminated a lot of heartache in my family. I have one kid who dreads the slow pace of class and wishes it could move faster. I have others who could benefit from a slower pace in some of their classes.

Really, what it comes down to is letting kids who are self-motivated move at their own pace. Then, spend your direct teaching time with the kids who need a push and a shove to the end of the race.
