We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, I looked that festival up. The top financial/facilities supporter is a community college. Last time I looked, community colleges were government funded.
You realize this isn't about the poetry, right? It's about the people who want to feel good about supporting the "arts"....with your money, Philistine.
BTW, is calling someone a Philistine to imply they are uncultured, being Semitic?
Ah, The Angelou, author of the garbled and barely literate 'I know why the Caged Bird Sings' and other dreck. (Yes, I read all that drivel in my youthful need to feel a part of the intelligentsia. But soon I grew a few more brain cells and saw the nakedness of the empress of prattle.)
Too stupid to realize she has no talent, pumped up with pretensions to aristocracy spoon fed by the chortling sycophantic 'masses' who are delighted to find 'a person of color' who can be held up as a shining star... of what, exactly? Mediocrity? Less than Mediocrity? Someone else said "she bored the entire nation or at least those who bothered to watch 'The One's' inauguration... There should be a class action suit to recover time lost".
But what would I know about poetry/literature or the 'arts'. So I should just shut up and pay my taxes to support The Machine which produces such marvels.
But before I go, here is a quote that seems apropos:
“Support for the arts -- merde! A government-supported artist is an incompetent whore!” -Robert Heinlein
