Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. A modest proposal on college affirmative action

The Student Solution to Affirmative Action:



What would happen if all those white students who assert that racism is still a “major problem” and who approve of affirmative action as one remedy followed their beliefs and did not apply to selective colleges such as Williams, Wesleyan, Boulder and U.Va.?  How would that alter the demographics of elite campuses?


The admissions offices at those schools would face a less-competitive white applicant pool and could boost minority acceptances. Thousands of white students with eight AP courses, a 4.0+ GPA, and 95th-percentile SAT scores would not join the mix and raise the averages.

There is a reasonable and logical solution to this problem. There are a number of race based organizations (NAACP, LULAC and others) and a number of activists for various minorities. Why wouldn't they combine assets and fund raising to use to tutor and improve education for minorities. A self help approach that would meet the constitutional test. It would be enormously better for the minority students who struggle when they are "given" entrance to prestigious schools and many of whom fail for lack of adequate preparation for higher ed. It would be better for the opinion the general public would have minority students and minority graduates (would you allow a surgeon to operate on you if you knew the ONLY reason they got into medical school was because of the color of their skin?). It would also improve the creds of the many minority organizations and activists in the eye of the pubic (does anyone really have any respect for the NAACP anymore?). It would be a win win all around and it could legally and honorably put even more minority students into colleges then a strict quota system would. It is a viable and intelligent solution which of course means the left would never even consider it.

my modest proposal (and yes, I know it's a radical one to many) is to do away by law with all race based selection criteria.
Make it illegal to ask for anything that can indicate race on any application paper.
And yes, that means the name of the applicant won't be on the forms used to determine eligibility. Instead it'll only be on the cover page, together with a number that's repeated on every other page, the cover page being just filed and not seen by anyone outside the records office.

No more "affirmative action", no more "race based admission quotas", etc. etc.

If blacks (or anyone else) can't compete in such an environment, they only have themselves to blame.

I love it: "Hey, if you want to make more room for deserving but under-credentialed minority applicants, how about giving up your own slot?"

It goes along with my preferred approach to charity: give your own darn money.

Some of them would, still being starry-eyed. But their liberal parents who know what actually counts wouldn't let them.

The elaborateness of the parents' rationalisations would make for fun reading though, wouldn't it? After taking your blood-pressure medicine, that is.
