Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

English Studies, R.I.P.

Having lost faith in the discipline they are (over) paid to teach, literature instructors have enthusiastically embraced their roles as the guardians of progressive pieties about women and the Chinese.


This is not to suggest that Gilmour himself is any kind of resistance hero. He has long since apologized for his remarks and will almost certainly never make any such again.



Mau-mauing works. Even tough guys like male profs of literature are intimidated.

hello Barrister -

I always thought the required email entry for comments was visible to the website owners.

One last ?, then I'll be out your hair - I've called a couple of other chimney service providers who are announcing free estimates on their websites, but then tell me there's a fee for coming out to view the scope of work.

Two different amounts ($75 & $50) to boot!

My question(s) - is this normal and do the amounts sound reasonable (I don't mind paying, but this is not a "free" estimate in my book)?

You are going to have to pay to get an honest and dependable inspection. I would shy away from those who promise low cost in favor of those who have been in business for awhile and have a decent reputation. Make sure they have a camera that gets inside of the chimney and that you get printed pictures of anything needing attention. This wil be money well spent.
