We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Negative action," i.e., discrimination, occurs when a rejected Asian-American applicant would have been accepted "if he/she was white." But when that same rejected Asian-American applicant would have been accepted if he or she were black or Hispanic, that's "positive or affirmative action."
As the writer notes, there is nothing fair or rational about affirmative action. It's just a race-based political spoils system, and everybody knows it.
Chasing someone up an escalator is a waste of effort. Fleas on a dog. Who gets to see these little video snippets? Will anyone's vote will be changed by stunts like this? Those who are already convinced Warren is a fraud and a liar, in terms of her claimed Indian heritage and her academic prowess, don't need to be further convinced of that, and those who now support her because she is a Liberal will see this as sheer, unfair harassment. What's the point?
As for the Beginning of the End of Affirmative Action, as Instapundit is wont to write, don't get cocky. There are a lot of people who have a lot invested in the racial spoils system. They are not going to let it go by the boards without a serious fight. Where would the Jesse Jacksons and the Al Sharptons and all the other race hustlers be without AA? It's their bread and butter.
It was one of those many poorly thought-out ideas that people reflexively thought was going to fix things. People discriminate against black people. The scales are weighted against them. Let's keep adding weight to one side of the scales until they balance.
There were unintended side effects, as always: the idea of different categories of Americans, rather than an American unity, is now reinforced, preventing those who are color blind from being so. We have made the best behavior impossible in order to prevent the worst. Secondly, we must then adopt the viewpoint that if there is unequal outcome, it can only arise from discrimination. It's a package deal, though not immediately apparent.
I acknowledge that there were those who from the beginning knew this was only political patronage, of the sort found in most other countries, planning from the start to make their living from the spoils. But the majority were not so cynical. They hoped to right an historical wrong. It did do some of that. But the cultural and moral cost was higher than projected.
Assistant VIllage Idiot
Paleface squaw speak with forked tongue.
Heap bad medicine.
Lets not forget that affirmative action is not merely race based. It is also gender based. I'm still waiting for one of those heroic conservative ladies we see in the news to renounce all those legal entitlements they enjoy. Not holding my breath though.
You guys ever think that Cherokee women in MA was a trailblazer? Sure, if she can wrap any handy 'minority status' around her shoulders like it was a new scarf, we can all be any minority we want to be. Yep, Warren liberated the world of minority entitlements. Now, I believe I shall be a women of color with a twitchy eye whose sexual preference renders me extra, super duper special.
Hush now, I'm calling the White House to let them know I'm available for the next Cabinet level job that opens up. I guess ambassador would be OK too.
