Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

What is a gentleman?

Attributes of the Gentleman, or Mr. Darcy’s Rules of Engagement.


He omits the classic "A gentleman knows when/where he is not wanted," but that might be subsumed under one of the other Five Traits.

Interesting and nicely put. I would have preferred that he said "However, the commitment to equality that characterizes American society recently (and indeed all western societies) is not completely benign." I don't believe it was always thus. That was the great difference between the American and French revolutions - the American espoused equal treatment under the law and thus equal opportunity (though the implementation was flawed), and the French espoused equality of man. They are very different things as Jefferson noted in his disappointment in the French Revolution.

A gentleman is a guy who can play the accordion (banjo, tuba, etc.) but does not.
