Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, April 20. 2011Ask first what your country can do for you?Has America slowly become a greedy entitlement culture, in which there is no longer any shame in taking from one's neighbors? Wish I had written this, by Harsanyi: If Washington Is So Great, Let's All Pay for It. One quote:
In my view, we are at a tipping point when half the country has become pure free-loaders, and many more have their favorite freebies. See Poll shows Americans oppose entitlement cuts to deal with debt problem. I am a flat-taxer. No personal deductions either. No business or corporate taxes, and no estate tax. (I also want means-testing for Social Security and Medicare, which is just one reason I am not in politics). Think of how much money would be saved on lawyers, accountants and tax-planners. That money could be used productively - by us (not by the government). Of course, if my American Vision were magically realized, the Left would just re-create the whole mess again. The vote-buying, the handouts, the deductions, etc. Am I the only person who takes no freebies and wants no freebies from anybody else? Trackbacks

A lot, but then they would be out of work and on welfare. :>) I agree with you on the flat income tax - its the only fair way to do it. No deductions, no lying, cheatin', stealin', etc. The only problem is that it isn't "fair" to lower income earners as it would take a larger chunk, relatively, of their income than higher income earners. Then again, it might be an incentive no? There are ways to mitigate this but then it wouldn't be a pure flat tax system but a flattish tax system. If we get any improvement at all of our tax structure, probably the best we can hope for is a flattish system.
No freebies here. No thanks - In fact I'll be paying for my kids' parochial high school.
Retired Navy here. No other income.
I do take my deductions as permitted by law when submitting my tax returns. Don't see them as "freebies". Definitely am in favor of a flat tax in conjunction with means testing. The Democrats and statists have won, however. It's over. Change - the kind of change we must have to survive as a republic - isn't going to happen absent a new (hopefully peaceful) American Revolution; with 75 percent of us in thrall to the Feds in one form or another, IMO we'd never get more than 20 percent to support a flat tax. The rest of all the change being argued over now is just nibbling a bit around the edges of the massive Federal debt load, never mind the states and municipalities. Absent major changes, we are going under. Not feeling positive today, as you might tell. Wish it were otherwise...but with easily 45 percent of adults receiving tax benefits, they have no ownership in a flat tax where we all pay. Sorry Old Salt takin' freebies is takin' deductions even though yall voted for them.
Is that pension funded or is it paid for with debt? God Bless USA. Hey! How about the .gov matches our 401k/403b's instead of offering the pension? Better yet, why not stop taxing savings and investments and let me save for retirement / post military life like an adult?
It was never an option for me. Do your 20 years or get nothing afterward. "Am I the only person who takes no freebies and wants no freebies from anybody else?"
No. But I've been sorely tempted lately, because in my present situation I surely could. The temptation comes from wanting to stick it to the idiots who vote for and support this kind of stuff. Will I do it, that is, take "government handouts?" Not likely, but I'm a weak man... Oh, and regarding taxes:
10% on everybody, everything. No more, no less, no changes. Why should the government cost more than God? ("Tithe") If they can't afford their programs on ten percent, tough luck... it doesn't get done. "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more!" We're middle class or at least we fit the financial description - up to the part where it says we don't pay taxes. So when do we get that $25,575.80 back? You know, that the gummint took out of the paycheck?
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride, Barrister.
You have the misfortune of being born 100 years too late. The world you yearn for is long gone. You can console yourself the thought that you will be witness to one heckuva a train wreck. One of historic proportions. One in which we will all be hurt. It would be fascinating to watch if it wasn't so tragic and preventable. And another thing, since I like talking to myself:
I'm 51 years old, and my body is breaking down. I've never counted on Social Security, Medicaire, Medicaid et al, and I honestly don't even know what those things are, what they're worth, or how one obtains them. When that day comes, I'm going to climb the mountain, in a literal and figurative sense, and lay down and die, and let the vultures peck my eyes out and the bears scatter my bones. Morbid, you say? F--- the government. I'll be damned before I ask them to save my life. And to go all Hestonian on you, "Damn them. Damn them all to hell!" I just want to be left alone not only by the government, but all the other social do gooders out there asking for donations to help some cause or another.
We have become a nation of lecturers. I don't know if it is increased government or reality tv, or a feminine takeover of culture, but I'm getting pretty sick of it. Whatever happened to mind your own business and live and let live? I agree Miss Becky, I have cut my donation list to supporting the youth and disabled. Everybody else with a return envelope gets all their paper returned to them. Why should my local land fill store their trash? I request my name be taken off their mail list. Blick
If the Federal government is spending twice as much as revenues, then to balance the budget without cuts, taxes will have to be twice the current rate. Ya'll ready for that? And that does not consider balancing the state and local budgets. Remember the tongue in cheek tax form -- how much did you make? -- Send it in. Not so funny now. Blick
we live on 80/10/10.
live on 80%,save 10%,and tithe 10%. It's worked pretty darn well for a decade plus. We've raised the kids and paid off most debt but a small mortgage that will be finished in another decade,if there is another one left. We're in our mid 40's and have not one care of any entitlements or securities for retirement.Hell we have another 25 plus years of working to endure! God is in control regardless and blesses us all in different ways. One persons nestegg is anothers nightmare I think..... CIII "Am I the only person who takes no freebies and wants no freebies from anybody else?"
I was like that for a long time. But given the ever more destructive taxation for ever more frivolous things (plasma televisions and resort holidays for minorities on social security were declared "necessities of living" here recently) while my parents were denied things they're legally entitled to and had paid all their lives to get (modifications to their home when my mom became wheelchair bound, which are paid out of healthcare taxes, were denied because they were deemed "too rich" by a flunky at city hall) I've changed my mind. I'll fleece them wherever I can to an amount no more than I pay in taxes and as long as it's within the law. So I now take the deductions I can get, the excemption on hybrid cars, the free fiber optics installation, etc. etc. Recent articles indicate that 50% of Americans pay no income tax or that 50% of Americans pay no net income tax or that 50% of households pay no net income tax -- the phrasing varies a bit. The implication is that half of Americans are freeloaders.
Not so. For one thing, some (hardly all) of the 50% who don't pay a net tax on income do pay into Social Security. In my own case, I pay both income tax and social security, and I wind up paying more for SS than for income tax. (I have a military pension so I'm a net loss). For another thing, everyone who buys things in the US pays federal and other taxes. Every business pays some kinds of taxes, every gallon of fuel involves taxes, every product moved around the nation involves taxes, and every imported product involves taxes. Wal-Mart may have written the check for import duties on bicycles, but the people who bought the bicycles paid the taxes. The current tax codes are unwise and unfair. The idea that many people have the idea that they don't pay federal taxes is also unwise. But nearly everyone in the country does pay federal taxes, even if they don't know it and even if it's a small amount. With a brave effort our lawmakers may someday reform the Social Security system, but it will take blood in the streets to reform Medicare and Medicaid. Hordes of slavering lawyers with their tactics, greed, and grotesque damage settlement claims have led to previously unimaginable costs in liability avoidance. Tort reform NOW.
It's almost as though leftists should be ruthlessly suppressed wherever and whenever they appear.
Teddy? Is that you?! Oh, wait... it was "Swimmer," not "Diver."
