We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A chat with a Physical Therapist today at noon. She told me that they enter the codes of diagnosis etc, and Medicare or Medicaid generates a response telling them how many sessions the patient can have, of what duration, and at what payment.
"What do you do here?", I asked.
She said that their department's policy is this: Patient gets whatever is reimbursable. If 8 sessions are allowed and they only need 4, they get 8. It can't hurt. If 8 are allowed and they need 30, they get 8.
"We don't even bother anymore asking them to pay for more therapy if they need it. If it's not free, they never take it."
The physical therapy area of health care is rife with rip offs. When my husband broke his shoulder, he found a therapist near our house and spent four months going to him every week. When he stopped, because the therapist told him there was nothing more he could do for him, we've continued to have four more months of billing from him, because the therapist had not yet finished draining off the Medicare assigned funds for his broken shoulder. I would have stopped it, because they continued to bill me as well, but I couldn't find a way to do it. This is one of the ways that billions of dollars get wasted with single-payer health care.
Wouldn't this be the place a Citizen would either: find the appropriate law enforcement to report to, or at least demand the follow through of treatment you were charged for?
(I don't mean to pick on you personally.) Isn't this the same as turning a blind eye to vandelism because it's not your personal property? First they tag the walls, then the broken windows, pretty quick you have squatters and the police don't dare to help in that neighborhood.
Jerry ... What this is, is a realization by two elderly folks in their 80s that it's a lot of work and hassle to try to correct Medicare on anything. Also, for 80-plus-year-old folks, taking issue with the Medicare people would draw their attention to us and God knows what they'd do, since our 'pull dates' are already stamped on our foreheads. The whole thing is quite Kafka-esque. And extremely exhausting. However, if the Therapy outfit continues this for one more month, I'll probably have to do something.
And Jerry, I've been a good citizen for longer than you've been alive. If I were fifty again, I'd don my armor and saddle up my white horse and charge the blockhouse. But with the dreadful shadow of Obamacare looming over this picture, I've reluctantly decided to keep a low profile and hope they don't notice me and put me on The Death List.
I'll leave it to you young whippersnappers to fight the battles. I just don't want the death panels to get my correct address.
Thank you for response. I have no doubt you have been a Good citizen. Maybe this needs to be a closing battle?
You understand I have nothing but Respect for you, like my grandmother who passed too young for me to not get to know half way across the country.
At least here in Washington, They like to crow about how they have spent $XXX to root out $x in fraud. Unfortunately, maybe that is the nature of advancing market as less people do more, leaving the rest with nothing to do having to make up jobs like that, even though it isn't highly productive on the whole?
I would say "Please don't give up" but I already know you haven't given up.
