Different sorts of truths and lies

Via Legal Insurrection:

True � The statement is accurate and there�s nothing significant missing.
Mostly True � The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information.
Half True � The statement is accurate but leaves out important details or takes things out of context.
Barely True � The statement contains some element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression.
False � The statement is not accurate.
Pants on Fire � The statement is not accurate and makes a ridiculous claim.

In the political world, there are all sorts of truth. In the real world, only one sort. In the real world, a half-truth is a lie.

Thank you for posting this.

I was amazed to get a flyer in the mail from a group called "Women's voices, Women's votes" that was full of twisted truth. For instance: they claim that Chellie Pingree's opponent wants to "raise the Federal tax to 28%".

Who wouldn't vote against that? (In fact: he favors the flat tax)

This doesn't include what Heinlein referred to as one of the most artful ways in which to lie:

Tell the truth, and maybe even tell the whole truth, but do it in such a way that your listener is convinced that you're lying.

"Deceit" is an interesting variation --the artful withholding of pertinent information, while filling-in technically truthfully the area around it. the worst form of it imho is when you get in a bad situation due to it, and then call the deceiver on it, only to hear "But I DID tell you --you just forgot."

Once is all such a person gets to do that to me, now, in my less-entangled curmudgeonly years. Once, and that's all she wrote, pard --you 'n i is finished with our business.
