Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

An impressive politician

Remembering Lincoln at Powerline. 


I hate to correct Scott, but Lincoln was not the unanimous choice of the brand new Republican Party - he was the relatively-unknown compromise choice when a contentious convention could not agree on the front-runners - most of whom he put in his Cabinet.

But Lincoln was a shrewd politician. His supporters had the convention in Chicago that year and that gave Lincoln home field advantage.

I accurately wrote that Lincoln was the unanimous choice of the 1858 state Republican convention in Springfield to run against Douglas. The poster is "correcting" me for a statement I didn't make regarding the 1860 national convention in Chicago.
Incidentally, Lincoln's "nomination" by the Illinois Republicans to run against Douglas was the first time a candidate had been designated in this manner.

Doris Goodwins book "Team of Rivals" has an excellent, readable discourse on Lincoln's nomination and his expert manipulation of the nomination and political process
