We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Unlike grand luxe cruising, freighter cruising isn't for everybody. Still, I know people who would not voyage any other way. Photo is from a 'round the world 124-day trip from the site below, which offers many long and short trips.
Back in the early '80s, my friend Captain Larry Doyle was skipper of an Onasis Tanker, the Mt. Vernon Victory (635', 60,000 DWT originally built at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, MA in 1961). Onasis Tankers all had one feature - the "Owner's Suite" located on the bridge deck replete with Baby Grand piano.
He invited the Mrs. and me to take a cruise from Baltimore, MD to Caracus, Venezuela, through the Canal to San Diego, CA, back through the Canal to Caracus and then to Houston and on to Baltimore. Four weeks and it was a blast. We stayed in the Owner's Suite and the trip was very interesting for me, not so much for the Mrs. so she left us in San Diego and returned home. She got to do some shore shopping and became very good friends with ship's cook which continues to today.
If you were to do it, I'd recommend, if SWMBO is going along, that you pick one that makes port frequently - that way SWMBO won't get bored with your company. :>)
I came across this aritcle.
