We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
...here's a point where I agree with Frum...the idea of restraining the government based on a limited powers argument is an anachronism. Most Americans have no real understanding of the Constitution or the concepts upon which this country was founded. An overwhelming number of Americans are far too willing to accept any government action as legitimate even if it involves trading a little freedom for the promise of some government goodies.
During your election, I had a few conversations with starry-eyed Canadian Obamaphiles. I pointed out that, judging from Obama's platform, he appeared quite cooler towards Canada than George W., the man they all reviled.
But my countrymen were enthralled with the senator from Illinois and not about to shake themselves out of their teenage crush.
Sure enough, President Obama doesn't seem to care much for our nasty old oil sands, source of our ill-gotten wealth and consequent prosperity.
"But, but, we love him! He's so much nicer than Bush!"
It had just never occurred to them that The OneTM was elected to be President of the United States, not King of the World.
