Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re: the 10th amendment. Why is he naive? The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1798 spell it out rather succinctly. I know the civil war 'changed all that stuff' although how I'm not sure. Please enlighten me. The nature of governmnet has not changed. The checks and balnces idea behind the federal republic has not changed. The states are still the states. Slavery and involuntary servitude are no more since we all now happily rent our natural rights (as long as you pay your direct taxes). I suppose the 9th and 10th amendments are the only ones no longer in effect without repeal by the states? If the civil war amendments were intended to repeal the 9th and 10th they would have said so and they would have been rejected by the states under military occupation or not.

I think his naivete is displayed as such: "We are a federal republic. It’s about time we started acting like one again."

Oh, Really? Tell that to the Patriot Act being used by Obama to now jail 16 year old kids indefinitely with no rights. Tell that to every president, ever, and all their proclamations and executive orders and wars on this and that. Great Society my ass.

Re your comment about government health care. See if you can find a veteran who chooses the VA health care system if he has an alternative.

Most of the guys I know use the VA only for the free meds and avoid the hospitals, clinics, etc like the plague.

For those of you who have a Facebook account....I have started a group, called MMC - May, Might, Could.

It is premised that certain sciences have been hijacked by the semi-literate and the MMC crowd. Real science is not about consensus, nor is it about MMC. It is about hypothesis and testing. It is not about computer modeling for "truth". That is for politicians.

Love the videos of British 'Grumpy Old Men' and their gripes about the over-interference of the nanny government in their lives. That's where we are headed, if the Obama Administration has its way. The Brits have a genius for satire and wit. But it's a gloomy prediction nevertheless.
