We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Agree, RdH, this guy- Rep McCotter- sounds like he has possibilities. He seems to preach the Gospel as we know it, and with the kind of droll wit not heard in a Republican since Alan Simpson and Bob Dole? I would like to see more of him- FoxNews people should have him on.
Rising GOP force. Throwback personality, leads others back toward better era when low-key, determined, application of internal ethical structure was what was expected of leaders.
It seems like you could make a winning coalition around:
- Ethics
- Honesty
- Prudence: fiscal, social, domestic and foriegn policy (e.i., goverance with some humility and understanding of its limitations)
- Respect for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
- Pride and love of U.S.
These are naturally conservative traits without having to debate about what the term 'conservative' really means and who qualifies as a true 'conservative'.
The GOP would actually have to individually and collectively demonstrate these traits to earn the brand of the party of ethical and prudent behavior. If the GOP could do this, it would be a clear differentiator to the donkeys.
I know people have their issues with Michael Steele, but compare his character to the Dem's last couple of party leaders - McAuliffe and Dean. I think the GOP could and should make the case.
Nice clear declaration, phil g, I like it. Though ideally of course it should/would work for either party, as those values are American values at core.
(Ethics, honesty, prudence, respect, & pride in country) I would add optimism and humor, but I have been thinking the same thing: we need to find a rallying point for AMERICANS. Not conservatives, democrats, liberals, republicans, progressives, etc.
Most Americans still believe strongly in these things.
Buddy, I like this guy. First time I ever saw a picture of him.
Kinda looks like Bob Newhart, with his sharp sarcastic humor and wit and unrateable way about him.
Sorta like you.
The Financial Times (London) is currently doing a series on Saving Capitalism and has name fifty of the most prominent people in the world who will frame the debate.
They are presented in a picture format that when your mouse is pointed to a picture a short bio/info comes up.
Ranked in this worldwide group of only fifty was EL RUSHBO
The man has gravitas. The FT is no ordinary paper but read worldwide and considered by many the best in the business.
Thanks for posting Rep. McCotter on Maggie's. I love this guy! I first encountered him in 2007 on a Heritage Foundation podcast about the Iraq War and I blogged about it here.

He was being a bit less jovial but displayed that same no nonsense, conservative common sense that we seem to be lacking in both the GOP and Washington. If he seeks higher office he'll get my money and my vote!
