Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

WHO NEEDS ICELAND?
Too Much Money Is Beyond Legal Reach New York-based funds are abusing 'secrecy jurisdictions.' A major factor in the current financial crisis is the lack of transparency in the activities of the principal players in the financial markets. This opaqueness is compounded by vast sums of money that lie outside the jurisdiction of U.S. regulators and other supervisory authorities. The $700 billion in Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's current proposed rescue plan pales in comparison to the volume of dollars that now escape the watchful eye, not only of U.S. regulators, but from the media and the general public as well. There is $1.9 trillion, almost all of it run out of the New York metropolitan area, that sits in the Cayman Islands, a secrecy jurisdiction. Another $1.5 trillion is lodged in four other secrecy jurisdictions. Following the Great Depression, we bragged about a newly installed safety net that was suppose to save us from such a hard economic fall in the future. However, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve System, the Comptroller of the Currency and others have ignored trillions of dollars that have migrated to offshore jurisdictions that are secretive in nature and outside the safety net -- beyond the reach of U.S. regulators. We should have learned a long time ago that totally unsupervised markets, whether trading in tulips or subprime mortgages, will sooner rather than later get into trouble. We don't have to look back very far in history to understand this. Long Term Capital Management, a hedge fund "based" in Greenwich, Conn., but composed of eight partnerships chartered in the Caymans, was supposed to be the wunderkind of the financial world. At its peak in the late 1990s, its gross holdings were valued at $1.8 trillion. But, regrettably, its liabilities exceeded its assets and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York had to step in and rescue it when the value of its assets plummeted. Most recently, two Bear Stearns hedge funds, based in the Cayman Islands, but run out of New York, collapsed without any warning to its investors. Because of the location of these financial institutions -- in a secrecy jurisdiction, outside the U.S. safety net of appropriate supervision -- their desperate financial condition went undetected until it was too late. Of course, BCCI Overseas, which was part of the then largest bankruptcy in history, was also "chartered" in the Caymans. We have to learn from our mistakes. Any significant infusion to the financial system must carry assurances that it will not add to the pool of money beyond the safety net and supervisory authority of the United States. Moreover, the trillions of dollars currently offshore and invested in funds that could impact the American economy must be brought under appropriate supervision. If Congress and Treasury fail to bring under U.S. supervisory authority the financial institutions and transactions in secrecy jurisdictions, there will be no transparency with the inevitable consequences of the lack of transparency -- namely, a repeat of the unbridled greed and recklessness that we now face. Because of the monolithic character of world financial markets, a default crisis anywhere becomes a default crisis everywhere. author: Mr. Morgenthau is the district attorney for Manhattan, N.Y. For my money there couldn't be a better world test ( the Biden pronunciamento of yesterday) for Obama, should he win, than for the US to aid Israel in taking out the Iranian nuclear plants.
It will immediate force him to defend Israel or bow to the Islams. It will define his willingnesss to sustain an ally. It will force him to use military force to keep open the Straits of Hormuz. There are so many levels that it will force him to confront that his Marxist head will be spinning. So Mr. President George W. Bush your duty is clear. Before you leave office, with a Marxist waiting in the wings, bomb the hell out of Iran. It will be a clarifying moment for the entire world and boy do we need one. It will also keep Obama very busy working on the apology notes he'll immediately send out. As for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Taiwan et. al. Sorry , but at least you had a few years of freedom. Taliban, party all the time. AQ, ditto..... queue James Taylor's, "You've got a friend" Oh man, Habu, I had this exact conversation with somone the other night. What a perfect scenario. So perfect it makes me want to laugh. This is why we invaded Iraq - to give the Israelis the fly-over and refueling stop. Go for it!! Maybe Obama will turn a whiter shade of pale.
` Well, I read this differently.
If we don't force Obamas hand pre-election only one thing can happen as Biden said: The Israelis will nuke Iran from subs. They can't fly over without our help. They can't sustain a long term air offensive even with our flyover space. Only choice is nukes. When Russia/Iran/Syria et al. join the fray Obama will let Israel fry. "could be an unpopular decision" says Biden. Uh, huh. In otherwords: Israel will test Obama, and according to Biden, will lose big. Villainous Company wrote an ok piece but 60% was filler and somewhat naive. This paragraph had me rolling on the floor.
“What I think is most important is that we recognize that to solve the key problems that we're facing, if we're going to solve two wars, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, if we can -- if we're going to focus on lifting wages that have declined over the last eight years and create jobs here in America, then Democrats, independents and Republicans, we're going to have to be able to work together. I’m sorry but “working together cry” faded a long, long time ago. IF you are willing to give up a few things , like the Constitutional requirements for being President then yes, we can work together. IF Obama wins and get’s a supermajority in the Senate there will be ZERO incentive to work with the Republicans, who will be assigned to giving tours of the Capitol. In fact the Democratic Marxists will go for the jugular in every way imaginable. Personally I believe we’ll see the end of our Constitution. I completely understand her waking up at 3AM for I have been doing the same. I can’t watch the TV. I am preparing for a revolution. It’s not paranoia when they are truly out to get you and all you have to do is go down the checklist of The National Socialist Democratic Party to see that it’s 1932 in Germany again. Think not? Ask how free the people who are asked to vote for a union are with a thug standing over their shoulder. If McCain doesn't have Biden's gift on the networks in time for Game One of the World Series with the tagline "I approve this message because I disprove of America's Commander in Chief getting on-the-job training," then he is a done dunce. There is no better way to spend the remaining $47 million public pittance than on this message.
Øbama's grandmother has probably been stored in an icebox for months waiting for just this moment to try and take a Bidenism off the front page. HST was right, as Habu points out - There is no such thing as paranoia. They really are out to get us. Indeed, all loose ends are trimmed. NJ: "18 things you need for your computer. I do not understand this stuff."
If that list was representative of what one "needs" for their computer, then be glad you don't. Several of those "needful" things were Google: why would you want someone to have access to your computer?
Gewgaws are not indispensable: most people just need to learn what is already on their computer. Note: I just heard from the McCain campaign that Biden is off the campaign trail, with no scheduled events today. Now why would that be?
I think we all need to exhale. In a real-time world, what happens yesterday is not nearly as important as what happens now... or now... or even now. This election may still work out well for McCain, if there are enough real-time events like Biden's gaffe statement of fact yesterday. Speaking of exhaling. I wonder if they'll put Granny on life support until after the election?
Biden off the trail? Obama's first measure of punishment for not following the party line? ` Fox Biz News hAs the WSJ article author coming up for interview directly. Intro just now was "Who has Obama's ear?" Tune in quickly, you probly have a few minutes yet, the way Fox rolls out --
Caymans, caymans, isn't that where george "we americans need higher taxes" soros operates from?
I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate…And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you — not financially to help him — we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”
So a guy that associates with Ayers, Wright and Rezko wants us to trust him when something doesn't appear to be right. Not sure how thats gonna work. "your influence within the community"
I assume this comes with either a brown shirt or a more permanent black one. "My influence..." ?
I have none. I'm not a "community organizer." "your influence within the community"
Creating a new meaning for "being under the influence." "[C]ommunity organizer" positions are not available to us conservatives. well, the WSJ intrvwee on Fox was just announcing that Paul Volker has jumped on the Obama bandwagon. (*sigh*)
It appears that the entire Eastern establishment is going for Obama because they must protect their status before they protect the United States.
I will not weep for them when the coming revolution purges them: do they think they will not be swept away? I always agreed with barry goldwater that the old Eastern money was Democratic partly in order to hold down business challenges from the new money in the west and south, which was (is) republican.
where does that "it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.” quote come from? That's freaky, man.
BTW, Ayers is 'an embarrassment', not an 'embarassment'. Sorry for any embarrassment, but standards are standards. (oh lord hep me do i love to correct yankees' English, having had my bumpkin cornpone twang smircked at in all four corners of the land. er, make that, three corners. them other three corners.)

D.O.J. LAWYERS in the tank for Obama? "In all, DOJ lawyers and staff in the metro area have donated at least $150,000 to Obama. No wonder they seem more interested in prosecuting those who warn against vote fraud than enforcing vote-fraud laws." posted at 07:13 AM by Glenn Reynolds (lord hep us --i mean that too) "the two-leggeds are on the prowl:"

One day last October, Eric York lugged the carcass of an adult mountain lion from his truck and laid it carefully on a tarp on the floor of his garage. The female mountain lion had a bloody nose, but her hide bore no other signs of trauma. York, a biologist at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, found the big cat lying motionless near the canyon's South Rim. He was determined to learn why she died. MORE: Experts say next epidemic will come from animals BETTER LIFE: News and tips on flu, vaccines and more Because the park lacks a forensics lab, he did the postmortem in his garage, in a village of about 2,000 park employees. Epidemic experts can only speculate about what happened next. When York cut into the lion, he must have released a cloud of bacteria and breathed in. On Nov. 2, York was found dead, a 21st-century victim of plague, the disease that in the Middle Ages turned Europe into a vast mortuary. He was 37. (more) http://tinyurl.com/663weo I can't get this comparison out of my head: Nixon couldn't get anything out of Hiss when he was put on the grill by HUAC, i.e., same kind of smooth side-stepping with many non-denial denials, the same smug, too clever-by-half answers that "just didn't ring true" to freshman Congressman Nixon. Compare that to Obama's debate and other public performances and see if you don't see the eerie similarities.
For sources, I suggest you consult Sam Tannenhaus' recent bio of Whittaker Chambers, and "Perjury: The Hiss- Chambers Case" by Allen Weinstein, the classic on Hiss-Chambers. Start reading the excerpts from Hiss' HUAC testimony, the trial testimony, and Hiss' public statements and see if you don't agree. Oh, yes, Hiss was a Harvard Law man, too. When are we going to find out about Obama's past- all of it- only after it is too late and he is elected? And you know the bloodhounds won't go away, they have the scent and they will track it back to it's source, whatever that may be. The October Surprise is yet to come and Obama's campaign must be quite apprehensive, eh? We all know that there are plenty of Obama skeletons in the closet, any one or several of which could torpedo his ship and send it to the bottom. That is the Obama Campaign's mission for the last ten days: Keep the lid on at all costs and be on high damage control alert 24/7. Keep those guys digging 'round the clock in Chicago, the clock is running out. GOTCHA! |
