We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Why, I just had me some eggs and muffins for breakfast. I beat the livin bejesus out of both of them. Who says you can't win an election with sarcastic humor? Team Larson, McLeod, and Muffin Bottom Meta have jumped in the polls by 6 points. I wish I was as quick witted as these 3. But I'm just a lowly shepherd guarding my flock of dumb sheep.
Luther, I called that number and it turns out it is a retirement home for burnt-out, disillusioned shepherds. Not a bad place to be in these economic times, just as long as there's no women in black habits :)
Habu, Tips are a good idea if the interest rate goes up. The government is between a rock and a hard place. A lot of the COLAS would go up which would add billions to our already skyrocketing debt. I've got some money tied up in short term T Bills, some cash in house, some gold and silver; sold all my stocks 3 1/2 months ago. Better to stay on the sidelines and be safe. Oops! I forgot my bullets and guns too. Define yankee for me, you crazy jarhead :)
" ...but you'll like their habits... as they will treat you very well."
As long as those habits don't include smoking and Internet addiction and playing the ponies, right? Go for it, Jappy... maybe one will have the habit of taking off her habit every time you come into the room.
McCain-Palin Ticket has the winning hand if they will only bid and play it correctly, holding nearly all of the trump cards at this point. Obama-Biden Ticket has no more trump left to play, it's been played, i.e., the economic crisis, and now they hope to run out the clock. McCain-Palin, just the opposite: Attack, attack, attack right through November 3rd, playing a new trump card every other day. Repetition is the mother of learning, as my old college roommate used to say.
All of this conventional wisdom about voting out the party in power during an economic downturn/crisis/Depression whatever-the-hell- you- want- to- call- it is greatly mitigated if not cancelled out by the least qualified candidate to run for President in my lifetime, his questionable background and character, his membership in the majority party in Congress which brought us this mess, his receiving enormous campaign contributions from the precipitating cause of the financial crisis, his direct involvement in an organization dedicated to massive voter fraud, and on and on, all just waiting to be highlighted in swing state 527 ad's.
No, McCain-Palin and their handlers will have only themselves to blame if they don't win the swing states by enough votes to exceed what is called the "margin of litigation" in John Fund's excellent book "Stealing Elections". But if the vote falls in the "margin of litigation" in these swing states, then it will almost certainly be a result of voter fraud by the Obamafanatics, and McCain must fight to the last breath. Somehow I think McCain, the proven warrior and survivor, is the wrong guy to be screwing in a contested post- election battle like this.
Michelle Obama - First Beeotch. Makes me sick to think of it. I cannot even imagine that loathsome woman representing our country. I wonder whose head she'd go over to whine and complain to if her sorry husband won. "Hey, Jesus! They're not letting me have enough responsibilities."
Well the TIPS are adjusted for inflation which means that aside from getting yout principle amount back but you also don't lose purchasing power through inflation.
Here is the TIPS site for more info:
I think you're right where most prudent people would be at this point. Your allocation sounds good. Equities can be picked up for a song when this all shakes ou so if you have a time horizon that is long enough you might make some nice money*
That was the standard broker line five years ago, but we have just this week seen an entire decade and a half of equity totally wiped out so I'm personally not confident that any of us will live long enough to make the margin between what debt and eqity would be worth the mental stress of owning stock.
Additionally if Obama become Pres, he will finish turning out capitalist system inot a socialist one. The world of US economic is going through a once in every 300 year change.
I know one thing. What I thought I knew, I didn't.
Can you spare a dime?
O/T I hope you and the family are healthy and happy. That goes for everyone .
" I'm personally not confident that any of us will live long enough to make the margin between what debt and eqity would be worth the mental stress of owning stock."
How profound, Habu, that you mentioned the mental stress aspect of this. Think of older people who are on the verge of retiring right now and how life-changing this mess is for them. Talk about stress. And even for younger people whose plans included utilizing investments to buy a house or a small business. So utterly defeating and then to watch the hearings today and to see the CEOs of the big companies blaming anyone but their own greed. It's certainly nothing new in history, but it's one thing to read about it and another to live it.
