Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Dynamic Architecture

From Dubai, the fastest-growing city in the world. Some of this architecture is not for me: I do not like heights, or buildings that move:

More like Petroleum Architecture. None of this tall stuff in Dubai that is getting built has any architectural justification other than: we have a huge pile of oil money and don't know what we can possibly do with it. Come on - huge glass skyscrapers in the desert? 200 years hence, once the black stuff is drained and the people have left, it will all be a magnificent ruin, a fitting monument to the oil age.

A buddy of mine made a good point:
All of this "Oil Money" & fantasy
projects are actually jettisoning
technology... in much needed ways.

It is a fantastic idea that by separating
the floors with what looks to be discrete
wind turbines, the structure not only
creates enough energy for "itself" but
for other buildings as well.

I remember dining at the Windows of the World back when WTC was first built. I was putting my forehead to the glass and looking down on the Statue of Liberty and I realized the building was swaying. I ate less and drank more after that. I'm prone to motion sickness so a moving building is an anathema to me.

To see people that are two thousand years behind us put so much effort into such phalic endeavores, it remind's me of Molly Brown at the captains table on the Titanic. This was once the center of the universe.

Boy, what a bunch of pansy-waisted naysayers! LOL. This kind of "green" architecture is sorely needed in the world. The wind turbines on the building will not only produce all the energy needed to run the building (from the rotating mechanism to the bathroom light), but will actually produce extra - "green" - power that can be used by others.

As for its "moving" structure," the worst that could happen is the mechanism stops working and you end up facing in a single particular direction until it is fixed.

As for skyscrapers in the desert, that is simply a hopelessly (if veiled) racist comment: why should skyscrapers be limited to metropolises in "Western" countries? China is actually building more skyscrapers than Dubai. (In fact, China and Dubai currently use over 90% of the world's cranes.) And Dubai is a fast-growing country, with the fastest-growing economy in the world, and one of the more tolerant political-economic-social-cultural countries in the Arab world.

You guys need to get out more...
