Gramsci's essential insight was that violent revolution would almost always lose against the industrial power & consumer appeal of the capitalist systems, so, instead of bullets use words (and art) to create in the public spaces a continual corrosive nastiness in order to demoralize the people until they get the point that the left must either be allowed to run the country or else it will ruin the country, if only by making it unliveable and unworkable. It's the passive-aggressive, rather than the agressive, mode of revolution.

We're there now -- BDS is an artifact of the strategy, and the entire Obama appeal is based on relief from the continual nastiness in the public discourse.

And so it becomes a counter-revolutionary tactic to be robustly optimistic & cheerful about the country's prospects as guided by tradition. Having a hard time doing that, since the main expression is ridicule of the left -- but the left has gone beyond ridicule, and is degenerating so rapidly that it is immune from ordinary constraints such as shame & embarrassment.

For example, the national nutroots are currently here in Austin TX convening, and when Pelosi (the St. Joan of the Colombiano-American mafioso narcotrafficers, leading the psywar against America's allies in the hemisphere) hosted a Q&A yesterday, the topic was -- no, not energy, not Iran, not war & peace, not fiscal or monetary policy -- is she or is she NOT gonna impeach Bush while there's still time. IOW, they are gone -- hopeless -- ruined -- insane -- and here, in numbers, and *voting*.

I believe that in time Gramscians will find their stealth revolution becoming violent, as the rest of us decide to follow their lead and drop the guardrails. Go long tar 'n feathers, about 2012.
