Obama and Clinton were completely irresponsible. As the first President Bush discovered, it is simply irresponsible statesmanship (and stupid politics) to make blanket pledges to win votes. Both candidates did that on vital issues.

Both promised to not raise taxes on those making less than $200,000 or $250,000 a year. They both just emasculated their domestic programs. Returning the rich to their Clinton-era tax rates will yield, at best, $40 billion a year in revenue. It�s impossible to fund a health care plan, let alone anything else, with that kind of money. The consequences are clear: if elected they will have to break their pledge, and thus destroy their credibility, or run a minimalist administration.

I'd be obliged if BD would opine on the Pelosi article and the following comments.

If you're a Democrat, it's enough to mean what you say at the moment you say it.

Later, it doesn't matter -- because 'sh*t happens'.

As long as you can't be proven insincere at the exact moment you said it, you're okay to forget it.

While comments were down I was trying to post a link to a Boston Herald story concerning a jury mis-trial and a MA judge. In a murder case, 11 jurors accused the 12th of sexual harassment of the (majority) women juror members. That 12th juror (a man) was also the lone holdout for acquittal. The judge's comments were that the jury fabricated the charges to remove the lone holdout.

Here's one for you: The pope held an ecumenical event in the main synagogue in New York. Leaders from all groups:Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalians, etc were invited to attend. Guess who had a "scheduling conflict". Go here, read it and weep:

"Following his stop at the world's "meeting-place," the Pope'll settle in at the Holy See's Mission House on 72nd Street through the afternoon, emerging again before 5pm for the late-scheduled stop at Park East Synagogue before the ecumenical prayer-service at St Joseph's church on the Upper East. (On a side-note, among the national Christian leaders invited to the cross-community prayer was Katharine Jefferts Schori, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal church. Jefferts Schori declined the invite, citing a scheduling conflict; the US branch of Anglicanism will be represented by Bishop Mark Sisk of New York.)"

Makes Pelosi look like a piker--don't you just love tuff gals? Personally, I have taught my daughters to be strong individuals instead!

However, Missy Nancy isn't a he, so, she will have to answer not but her husband may for allowing her...if he did.

But if'n she didn't here Pope's injunction, she is ignorant.

The point with Pelosi wasn't about abortion - it's about the meaning of Communion. It's not a communion of people, it's communion with God.

You don't need to go to church to commune with people.

What a dope she must be.

she is not smart -- what she's doing to the country's latin american relationships is just stupifying. She's perfectly willing to destroy the entire hemisphere's efforts to beat back the new communism, in return for an "attagirl" from a dozen union bosses.

i do not know which is worse, that she knows what she's doing, or that she doesn't.

i dunno -- i haven't been taking part much lately -- evidently there's been some trolling -- you could go read the threads and see -- i doubt if the site is moving over that muslim guy -- maybe he was worse on other threads than the one or two i looked at.

My census was not scientific, but I believe being Portuguese and living in Rhode Island would make you part of the majority.

What Brooks did not point out is that Obama, after pledging not to raise taxes on those making less than 250K, promptly suggested doing so twice within the next 10 minutes - to raise the capital gains tax, and to raise the cap on the SS/Medicare tax that is now at $90 some odd K. That is two taxes in 10 minutes on the people he had just pledged not to raise taxes on.

And his followers are upset that they did not ask him more policy questions? He booted every one of those that were asked.

I remain completely confused about the minds of those who support Obama.

There is absolutely nothing rational about their support. You can't engage them in a discussion about the issues - in part because most have no coherent grasp of the the issues and conflicts in their positions.

They just support him.

I don't get it.

It's like the contradiction you cited. His followers are frothing over the questioning and demand more policy discussion, which he flubbed anyway. All I can say is, "Nuts!"
