Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Who was Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert?

I became curious about the Irish beauty Mrs. Gilbert (1821-1861), aka Lola Montez, who was a world-travelling adventuress and dancer who broke many hearts during her short but exciting life.

Even Sir Harry Flashman never forgot her, and that is saying something.

I live in Grass Valley, California where Lola Montez used to live. The Chamber of Commerce is housed in her former residence.

She was a vital part of entertainment in the Gold Rush era.
This is a gold mining town founded during the Gold Rush.

Based only on the wikepedia entry... and having never heard of the lady before... I like her. She must have been exceptionally smart, not to mention beautiful. Though some may question my use of smart... but a forerunner of Ashley Dupre... nah, a world of difference seems to me.

Today Lola's conquests sound romantic, but the basic sale is the same. Lola was good with product promotion; sometimes the advertisement was sufficient, sometimes she made the sale or rental. The reliance on"lovers and benefactors" is the same, although Ashley was probably more upfront and precise about the price. Given her time, though, at least Lola's negotiations were on her own terms, not those of her family or society.

Oh I wasn't seeing Lola as romantic necessarily... far from it actually. More as as a trailblazing entrepreneur. In the early 1800's women were little more than chattel. She fled from the mold... took on her own shape. Dared to say to hell with convention... after all, unless a monk on a mountain top... we do all sell ourselves don't we... one way or another. So sure, in a sense she was still chattel, but at least it was on her own terms. And she evidently was good at what she did... she's still remembered... at the least has an entry on wikepedia... but Ashley... her 15 seconds are already forgotten history.

Good take, Luther. I like her, too. Saying to hell with convention is my favorite fun thing. Next to screaming my guts out at the go-cart track.
