We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The rules have become very clear:

1. If Hillary calls attention to the fact that Obama is black, then that's the serious crime of "playing the race card."

2. But if Obama uses the word "black" in every other sentence, that's perfectly okay.

3. You may not vote on who the candidates actually are:

A. If you don't feel a woman, raised in the South, attending a radical school like the UC at Berkeley, would adequately represent you, a male from the Midwest, then that's the heinous crime of "sexism."

B. If you don't feel a black man, raised in a culture where he's been hearing about being "oppressed by Whitey" since birth, would adequately represent you, Mr. Whitey, then that's the unforgivable crime of "racism".

4. The two Democratic candidates don't need to have specific platforms because racism and sexism are much more interesting to talk about.

I think that pretty much sums it up.

NJ: Cavett's article on Fischer was one of the most interesting things I've read in a while. His comment, "No one should achieve fame before 30" was certainly perceptive, and here Fischer achieved national fame at age 13. It's no wonder the guy got kind of flippy, although I'd feel somewhat paranoid, too, if all I did was play a simple game of Chess with someone in a foreign country and, the next thing I know, the American Government wants to arrest me. For playing a game of Chess?

Great essay on Fischer -- Cavett was good there. Poor ole Bobby -- too bad he never found his way to a normal middle life.

Someone in the Cavett comments called his life a 'Shakespearian' tragedy. How true.

But -- before he became tragic, he had made himself into the very opposite (whatever that would be).

Cheney breaks with Bush on 2nd Amendment

Acting in his role of President of the United States Senate, not as Vice President, Dick Cheney his signed an amicus brief from Congress urging the Supreme Court to strike down Washington, DC's firearms ban as an unconstitutional breach of the Second Amendment. Robert Barnes reports in the Washington Post:


Cheney joined 55 senators and 250 House members in asking the court to find that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess firearms and to uphold a lower court's ruling that the D.C. ban violates that right. That position is at odds with the one put forward by the administration, which angered gun rights advocates when it suggested that the justices return the case to lower courts for further review.

First off, Wired is, advertantly, or inadvertantly, misrepresenting the gist of the reports. The one report DID NOT SAY that biofuels would double GHGs for the earth, only that they could cause a doubling in a very small sub-set of the total GHGs.

Second: Who in their right mind would plant switchgrass (it grows well in the South) on good corn land (we're talking North, here.)

As for Malaysia, and deforestation, here's what's happening in the real world. 2008, not 1998:

Oh boy, oh boy. Today in WA state is primary + Caucus day! Some kind of morphodite "collaboration" between those who thought it best to the primary system and those who liked the personal (democratic block party chairs) of the caucus system. Yours truly once registered on that side of the aisle, and as such was chosen to represent the neigbhorhood in their democratic caucus--WHAT A FARCE!
The power brokers came into the caucus (almost all union workers) they told us how it was going to play out and at the end of a day of their threatening, bullying, lying and manipulating it "worked out their way". I have never been one since. But, then years later the same group stole the Governor's mansion (current governor). So, why am I not surprised? The big wonderful question is this: will every white male in academia, or in a union job at Boeing, in the Fire Dept, the Police dept., etc. Will they do in the privacy of their ballot what they have been longing to do in their workplace for years--punch the bitch out!!
