Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Eclectic links this morning NJ. Thanks.
My question... re the letter contained in the Powerline post. How does a man like Kerry live with himself... I just don't get it. Are there no mirrors in any of his fine estates. Perhaps not, he may have someone giving him his daily shave I suppose. Really, I just don't understand how a person can have no shame. No sense of embarrassment, no sense of contrition, no effort to stand as a real man and set the record straight. It truly baffles me. Luther,
I believe that once you embrace the undeniable, that Bill Clinton is clinically a sociopath then your incredulity of his having no shame, no embarrassment, no sense of contrition, and no effort to stand as a man and take responsibility for his actions will abate. Actually Habu I was speaking of John F. Kerry. But your words apply doubly well to B. Clinton.
I suppose you may be correct... looked at as mental dysfunction it is much easier to understand... but still. Why do we let such men walk among us. Why the complicity of the media in enabling such behavior. Ah, never mind... I know the answers to those questions... it still just baffles me is all. Apologies for not keeping focused.
In part to you answer as to why they walk among us, I found it interesting when I became a stock broker that a previous mental breakdown or confinement to a mental institution was not a bar to becoming a broker. I remember with a smile on my lips the late campaign manager for GHW Bush, Lee Atwater, talking about the very abbreviated VP candidacy of Sen Thomas Eagleton. Atwater said he didn't have a whole lot of confidence in a man who had to be jump started with batter cables. (Eagleton had undergone electroshock therapy for mental disorders). Eagleton was immediately dumped as a VP running mate. But times change and now we can perhaps have our second cocaine snorting/dope smoking president ... the Democrats call that progressive. Well of course there must be some latitude given in approbation of those with mental 'issues'. But in these instances the behavior is so inimical to our country that such disorders should serve as barriers, and not, as they are ventured by the media, enhancements for the holding of public office.
That's exactly what has always blown my mind about Kerry -- he seems incapable of shame. I think his disgraceful presidential campaign in 2004 cost America yet again, yet another round of unnecessary war casualties.
Dr. Krauthammer, to my eyes and ears is an uncanny observer of the world stage. His analysis of Bill's presidency seems appropriate.
To change focus to B. Obama for a moment. Each new endorsement he receives includes the mention of his inspirering leadership. Aside from being a great orator, exactly what has he done to gain such encomium? I cannot find ONE moment of his three year Senate career that merits note. At this moment in time I would, without malice, but with honesty, have to place him at the head of the line of the great snake oil salesmen of all time. I would openly entertain ANY defense of ANYTHING he has done in the Senate worthy of being labeled an inspirational leader. Many would say it's his "vision" thing, his promise of new change. I can't tell you how many presidential aspirants have promised "change" It is traditional campaign oxygen. But what is his "vision" thing? Has he produced, or his campaign produce, even the most elementary white paper on what changes his clarity of vision will bring? I have never withnessed any pol getting a freer ride from an the press. They are all too busy jockeying for access to him should he become president. They know one probing article asking the wrong question will get them frozen out of Obamaland. The citizenry deserves better, because we are no longer in that hiatus from history that Dr. Krauthammer mentioned Bill Clinton enjoyed so much. We are in a protracted war with Islam, threatened by the rising military and economic power of China, and with Russia slipping back into darkness. It is no time for a snake oil salesman. Confed Yank,
I carry the Springfield .45ACP, 4" barrel with 13 round clip. It is a dream. I installed the Laser Max guide rod laser. FBI statistics point out that most shootings take place within a 8-15 foot distance, usually the 8 foot distance. I assure you that if you want to kill your target, that gun and that laser will get it done in your sleep. Personal preference but I would never carry a caliber other than the .45ACP. It's been a proven mankiller for over 100 years..one shot. If the Dems take over they will more than likely begin a gun confiscation program. I would recommend caching your weapons in sealed containers (along with ammo), keeping only a pistol and shotgun(s) around. The "assault types will get Shumered immediately. Now is the time to prepare yourself for some bad times. If you don't know how ,learn, cause the bad times are com'n. If you bet wrong you'll be a victim. If you prepare you may live. Gun confiscation always will be political suicide – somewhere between reinstating prohibition and taking away baseball bats and golf clubs – impossible to do without the ultimate backlash.
I agree...and that "ultimate backlash " would be civil war. You know it and the 'Tater clan knows it. But I believe the Democrats will make a horrible miscalculation and attempt it.
Chuck Shumer will push very heartily for it. They did after all invoke a ban on ownership of certain types of weapons in their last attempt at a total gun ban. Right now the SCOTUS is looking at a case that will decide the private vs. militia ownership question, but as Habu has mentioned,a freshly constructed SCOTUS with more members and packed with radicals would quickly overturn any favorable decision this court may decide. Even without civil war you’d have gun-running at the level of the rum-running of days past and much worse than the drug-running of today since there are so many gun hobbyists. And the ATF would become outrageously expensive to operate. The NRA’s cultural philosophy of ‘responsibility for the responsible’ is about the only practical solution.
Commander C.
Great point about the gunrunning, which totally escaped my thinking. I'm going to change my name to Rhett Butler or Jos P Kennedy. Although I kinda have a love /hate with the civil war thing. Hate it cause a lot of innocents get hurt. Love it because you get to eliminate large segments of of human debris. Global warming’s in the same boat. It’s not the experts yea or nay that’s important, but that any laws mandated could not be successfully or economically enforced.
When politicians don’t stick to the easy stuff like fighting good fights, port and border security, or “promoting experimentation and competition to find the best solutions” (from the 1/14/08 post “The Ethanol Fallacy”) I see it as political noise meant to hype up knee jerk voters. Why American Evangelicals are the West's Last Hope
By Vasko Kohlmayer American Thinker (in part) But America's fighting stance is by no means the result of unanimous consensus either. Quite to the contrary -- the Democratic Party is feverishly trying to reverse it. More than that, the Democrats are doing all they can to undercut America's ability to wage this fight. Here are just some of the things they have done as part of this effort: They have repeatedly conceded defeat in Iraq. Harry Reid once declared ‘this war is lost.' They have sought to undermine the country's faith in its troops and their commanders They outed and wrecked a crucial eavesdropping program designed to collect intelligence from terrorists' phone call They have sought to portray our troops as killers, torturers and rapists They seek to extend constitutional protections to foreign terrorists and enemy combatants They are trying to decimate crucial components of the Patriot Act They lobby for the release of most Guantanamo Bay detainees even though many are dangerous terrorists They have deprived America of one of the most effective tools for collecting intelligence (coercive interrogation) They have sought to destroy the reputation of the American military by making scandals out of minor incidents (Abu Ghraib) They have portrayed America's main terrorist detention facility as one torture chamber even though it is the most pampering prison in the history of warfare By manufacturing bogus scandals they have seriously damaged their country's international reputation in a time of war They purposefully downplay any American military successes They visit and praise America's sworn enemies some of whom are terror states responsible for the deaths of American troops. While there, they blast their own country. They seek the resignation of any member of the administration who advocates tough measures in the War on Terror They object to any meaningful action against Iran, the world's currently focal point of Islamic radicalism They want to quit the battlefield in the middle of a war Democratic Presidential leadership will make the above positions look like fingerpainting. We'll eventually end up a Guernica or worse an Oradour-sur-Glane If Charles Krauthammer is right -- and he sure could be -- a Hillary WH is gonna be a terrible sight to behold. And behold it we will -- we'll be at the kitchen table again, just like before. Yeeeeech....
Luther,
The XD. 4" barrel. A beauty. I just bought the Galco shoulder holster rig which is form fitted to the weapon and the straps are buttery smooth. All I need now is Ricardo Tubbs and a Ferrari with Phil Collins in the background playing.... http://youtube.com/watch?v=manxPVTLth8&feature=related Those 13 shot magazines are great but it's like holding a fence post -- i like my old-style 1911. odds are one intruder, and 8 rounds of .45 is a helluva dose.
Buddy...I promise you that is not the case with the XD model Springfield.
I have a WWII Colt 1911 and the width of the grip compared to the XD isn't worth discussing...go into your local gunshop and handle an XD..you'll be surprised. on your say-so i willdo it -- if it's not clumsy, 5 more rounds'd be great!
There is another aspect to the possible presidency of Hillary.
As you are aware one of my theories is that Bill was recruited by the KGB during his Oxford years and illegal trips to Moscow. As a private citizen, in the WH he could easily become the next iteration of former Occidental Petroleum Pres, Armand Hammer, who James Jesus Angleton, head of counterintelligence for the Central Intelligence Agency, said the CIA regarded as little more than a Russian spy. We could easily see Bill and Putin in a few international gas and oil deals, with Bill's pals stealing top secret material a la Sandy Berger and funneling it to Putin. What a guy. Haha... I loved that show you know... but I was considerably younger then.
Thanks for the info... I'm heading to the range later today and they have a great number of rentals, perhaps they have that one and I can try it out. I have read good reviews for that model. I wouldn't be able to wear a shoulder holster though... any suggestions, ankle perhaps. Bear in mind that I live in a part of the country where it is very hot in the summer. Good thing I looked before posting... I see your point Buddy... it is a hell of a load to carry around but it would probably reside in the vehicle if away from home, though I'm not sure of that as yet. Not sure of full time carry or not I mean. I understand the very hot part since I live part time in Florida.
In the summer I was wearing another Galco model on my belt. It fit very nicely, was molded to the gun and canted forward so that when worn slightly behing the hip it was an easy reach. I also own an Hawaiian shirt wardrobe that allows the tails out look (also traditional hawaiian since they do not tuck in, ever. This year I'm gonna try a spaghetti strap undershirt with the Hawaiian shirt unbuttoned using the shoulder holster..it may work if I add some pearls and high heels with he right amount of mascara. It's a darn shame but it's always too late to wish you had your rig on when the looney at the mall opens up on innocent women and children. At minimum you can surpress his/her fire until the police arrive. If he's intent on dying then just accommodate him should he advance or you get a clean shot. don't forget to drop a S&W .38 Special in your pocket, while you're deciding. Not a power-cartridge, but still good -- and the gun (with the small handle) is so small & light it's a true pocket pistol, with revolver reliability. Perfect fit in a Levi's back pocket -- no muss no fuss.

Re the 'Clinton money scandal' --jeez, his new bro controls one fifth of the world's known uranium? Woe! IBD chimes in: http://ibdeditorial.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=286762266202382 Buddy,
Is there nothing the Clintons won't do for power? That is an amazing piece and another sleaze episode I was unaware of. But then to track them all would take a village. Somewhere he's crossed the RICO statutes but no public attorney would dare prosecute him. Obama will be lucky if he isn't sleeping with the fishes when the Clintons finish with him. I put nothing -- nothing, zip, null, nada, zero -- past them.
It's as if they get a perverse pleasure from hiding in plain sight. You're right -- Obama needs to keep his head on a swivel -- and I don't mean just metaphorically. There is another aspect to the possible presidency of Hillary.
