We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

It is not for nothing that George Orwell had to invent terms like “double-think” and “double-speak” to describe the universe totalitarians created. Those who have watched the left as long as I have, understand the impossible task that progressives confront in conducting their crusades. Rhetorically, they are passionate proponents of “equality” but in practice they are committed enthusiasts of a hierarchy of privilege in which the highest ranks are reserved for themselves as the guardians of righteousness, and then for those they designate “victims” and “oppressed,” who are thus worthy of their redemption. Rhetorically they are secularists and avatars of tolerance, but in fact they are religious fanatics who regard their opponents as sinners and miscreants and agents of civil darkness. Therefore, when they engage an opponent it is rarely to examine and refute his argument but rather to destroy the bearer of the argument and remove him from the plain of battle.

...as in "anti-islamic activity" as a ruphemism for the jihad?

Such newspeak begs the question, if such "anti-islam" terrorists win and invoke sharia world-wide, then wouldn't the newspeak designation have to morph into something else -- perhaps "pro-islamic anti-islamic activity" ?

The caves of Lascaux article particularly saddens me. What an artifact will be lost should those walls be overcome by bureaucratic stupidity. Where is the EU? Shouldn't they be in direct charge of such a European treasure. Throwing the entire weight of the Union behind efforts to prevent such an atrocity.

With regard to Lascaux Ummm--I wonder--do you think this would have happened under another government? Do ya think maybe the Germans, or the Swedes, or . . . . might have the keener scientific edge necessary to truly treasure this gift?

Good question as to whether keener scientific prowess would save the caves. I would venture an answer of, quite possibly. I say this as the steps taken so far appear knee jerk and not well thought out.

Then again, here is a snippet of the response from the French ambassador to the US after being queried as to what steps France is taking to salvage the caves...

"Levitte also added it is “highly probable that global warming has fostered the explosion of molds and bacteria in the cave.""

So it would seem that the problem is not limited just to scientific ineptitude, or even bureaucratic stasis, but to yet another result of AGW. With that sort of delusional thinking I'm not sure I hold much hope for the caves.

Perhaps Al Gore can mention them, and thus garner some attention for the caves during his upcoming lecture series. An alternative might be for the French to send a scientific team here to pick up some pointers on cave preservation.
