Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

My terrible photo of a Sharpie

Cold yesterday morning, and this hungry female Sharpie (maybe a Cooper's) missed a sparrow at my feeder but decided to puff up her feathers and stand on the grass for a while looking around. Wonderful the way they can turn their head to cover 360 degrees. This is the best I could do through Thermopane glass and a screen:

At least you got a shot. I saw the hawk out walking, had camera, ten minutes later scared up a plump brown dove hiding next to path, and missed the hawk just diving and banking away from clumsy humanoid me!

Sometimes there's a bird grasped in one foot as they stand there. The standing seems to be a ritual with or without prey in hand.

One stood there and then took a blue jay to the top of a power pole for de-feathering, over the protests of the blue jay.

Empathy is not a hawk attribute.

We have a Sharpie visiting our feeder this year. One dove on a sparrow this morning, but I didn't see the results until I went to get my mail. Many sparrow parts on my front landing.

Maybe the screen can come off until the summer. There are no bugs now. I have gotten a few decent photos thru glass.
