Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

George Washington at Christmastime

Two of the most important events in American history involved George Washington at Christmastime. The first, of course, was the crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton which took place on Dec 26, 1776. That victory proved to an uneasy Continental Congress that Americans could stand up to European troops (in this case, Hessians).

The second was Washington's resignation in 1783.

There was a third event involving Washington, as pointed out in today's Wall Street Journal, that also happened around Christmas that was arguably as important as the other two. On Dec 19, 1783, George Washington freely resigned his commission, when he could have easily had himself installed as ruler. That act made sure our little revolution didn't end like nearly all others - with the trading of one tyranny for another.
