We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

What's the value of a fancy education?

Tom Brewton quotes Derek Bok in a piece on Sowell on Education - Substance vs. Perception:

...former Harvard University President Derek Bok wrote, Many seniors graduate without being able to write well enough to satisfy their employers. Many cannot reason clearly or perform competently in analyzing complex, non-technical problems, even though faculties rank critical thinking as the primary goal of a college education. Few undergraduates receiving a degree are able to speak or read a foreign language. Most have never taken a course in quantitative reasoning or acquired the knowledge needed to be a reasonably informed citizen in a democracy. And those are only some of the problems.

This may be explained by the liberal priesthood that infest the high holy places of academia.

When the citizenry can think critically the state shrinks. We don't want that do we? I mean Al Gore and the UN would be out of business. Heaven forbid the people have an historical perspective to color their views.

When I read those lines I came very close to doing the milk through the nose routine. I have no idea how that statement can be made other than in jest. For the past twenty we have hard polling data on the political alignment of a typical college campus.

Ninety to ninety-five percent liberal

And more data is coming in that these "professors" will brook no thought that challenges the warmed over Marxist/liberal cant they propagandize to young unkowing minds.

With rare exception the college campus of today is the LAST place you'll find the free flow of ideas.

Todays parents are of no help since they too have already been to the propaganda factory, a consequence of which is that very few of them learned any "critical thinking skills"...wait ..ROTFLMAO (Roll on the floor laugh my ass off)
